Nurse practitioner workforce hits record high

A record number of nurse practitioners are licensed to practice in the U.S., according to the American Association of Nurse Practitioners' 2019 National NP Sample Survey.

AANP sent an electronic survey to more than 59,000 clinically active NPs nationwide, and 5,770 responded.

Three report findings:

1. As of December 2019, an estimated 290,000 NPs were licensed in the U.S., up from about 270,000 in January 2019.

2. The four most common NP certifications in 2019 were:

  • Family (65.4 percent)
  • Adult (12.6 percent)
  • Adult-gerontology (7.8 percent)
  • Pediatrics (3.7 percent)

3. The median base salary for full-time NPs was $110,000. The median total income, which includes bonuses, was $115,000.
