5 lessons an HCA chief nursing executive learned in her 1st year on the job

Despite the compounding challenges of leading a team with upward of 93,000 nurses amid national staffing strains, an incessant pandemic and high burnout rates for the profession, Sammie Mosier, BSN, chief nurse executive at Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare, remains passionate and optimistic.

Ms. Mosier wrote in a Jan. 17 blog post for the health system that her "seat at this particular leadership table and related learnings over the past year have solidified," her vision for the future of nursing. "Nurses are the cornerstone to any healthcare organization's ability to provide safe, high-quality, compassionate care," she said.

Her experience navigating the tumultuous and continuously evolving conditions across the national healthcare landscape prompted her to share a few key lessons for future leaders in the profession, including:

  1. Actively advocating for nurses at all levels of experience.
  2. Leveraging full care teams in patient care delivery to create resiliency plans.
  3. Fostering clinical education and academic partnerships to aid the nursing shortage by creating a pipeline of new, educated and prepared nurses.
  4. Embracing technology solutions and incorporating them into care practices to support better patient outcomes.
  5. Prioritizing collaboration and extending that focus to diversity, equity and inclusivity across the workforce.

"Success in healthcare requires a resilient, caring team of authentic and diverse leaders who connect to the mission of patient care … and inspire others to be part of the journey," Ms. Mosier concluded.
