Michael Ugwueke, MPH, DHA, FACHE

Dr. Ugwueke is an accomplished healthcare executive with over 27 years’ experience and track record of developing partnerships with physicians, associates, and community leaders to address healthcare needs in the community while achieving higher levels of organizational performance.

Since his arrival in Memphis in 2007 to Lead Methodist South Hospital, Dr. Ugwueke has completely transformed the hospital and has achieved clinical excellence, market share growth, financial and cultural turnaround of the hospital. Given his accomplishments at South, Dr. Ugwueke was asked in June of 2009 to take over the leadership of Methodist North Hospital in addition to leading Methodist South. In 2012, Dr. Ugwueke was promoted to Executive Vice President and COO for the System and in 2014 he was again promoted to President/COO for the System and President / CEO for all seven Memphis Hospitals.

Dr. Ugwueke is very active in the Memphis Community, as a leadership Memphis alumni, Dr. Ugwueke is very interested in improving education and youth development.  As a result, he is currently serving on the board of Memphis Academy of Health Sciences one of the state's charter schools.  In addition, he is on the Central board of Boys and Girls Club of Greater Memphis. He has been recognized by the State, County and City elected officials for his efforts to improve access to quality healthcare in the community.

Dr. Ugwueke is a member of various organizations, including NAHSE and ACHE where he is Board Certified in Healthcare Management and a fellow of the college. He has a strong interest in mentoring students and fellows and a well-earned reputation of developing managers and challenging them with significant opportunities to excel.

Dr. Ugwueke received his Doctorate in Health Administration and Leadership (DHA) from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Masters degree in Public Health (MPH) with a concentration in Planning from Emory University, and his Bachelors (B.S.) degree in pre-med./biology from Shaw University in Raleigh North Carolina. In 2012, Dr Ugwueke was honored as a top 25 minority Healthcare Executive in the country by Modern Healthcare magazine.

Dr. Ugwueke and his wife Rebecca have two children, Michelle and Michael, Jr.

Redonda Miller, MD, MBA

Redonda Miller is president of The Johns Hopkins Hospital, an 1,100-bed academic medical center with $2.5 billion in operating revenue and more than 10,000 employees. Since her appointment in 2016, she has led successful efforts to expand the world-renowned hospital’s focus on high value care, to enhance safety and the patient experience, and to improve the health of all populations.

During Dr. Miller’s tenure, The Johns Hopkins Hospital has been consistently recognized for clinical excellence, maintaining its ranking among the top three hospitals in the nation on the U.S. News and World Report Honor Roll. In 2018, the hospital earned its fourth consecutive nursing Magnet designation, as well as an A for patient safety from The Leapfrog Group and the 2018 Healthgrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence.

Dr. Miller arrived at Johns Hopkins as a medical student in 1988. She joined the medical faculty in 1997 and earned a master’s degree in business administration from The Johns Hopkins University in 2004. Since then, she has served in several administrative roles of increasing responsibility, including vice chair of clinical operations for the Department of Medicine and senior vice president of medical affairs for the Johns Hopkins Health System.    

A practicing internist, Dr. Miller continues to see patients, allowing her to experience firsthand the impact of the decisions she and her executive team make on behalf of the hospital.    

Dr. Miller is active in several community and professional organizations, volunteering her time as chair of the 2019 Greater Maryland Heart Walk and as a member of the Maryland Hospital Association executive committee and the Gilchrist board of directors. Her many honors include being named by Becker’s Hospital Review as one of their 100 Great Healthcare Leaders and by Modern Healthcare as one of their Top 25 Women in Healthcare for 2019.

Dr. Miller is married to Albert Polito, a pulmonologist. They have two daughters, Francesca and Bianca.

Candice Saunders

Candice Saunders is President and CEO of WellStar Health System. She joined WellStar as Chief Operating Officer of Kennestone Regional Medical Center in May 2007, then becoming president of the hospital. Due to her experience and strong leadership, she was promoted to Chief Operating Officer for WellStar Health System in 2013. Then in 2014, the WellStar Board of Trustees announced that she would assume the role of President and CEO in 2015. Under Candice’s leadership, WellStar has been recognized as a leader in safety and quality measures. She is currently the chair of the Georgia Hospital Association and was recently named Healthcare Champion by The National Association for Female Executives. Candice is one of only 14 women receive a Women of Excellence award in 2015 and the only woman in healthcare. She has a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of South Florida and an MBA/MHA from University of Alabama-Birmingham.

Jaewon Ryu, MD, JD

Dr. Jaewon Ryu is Geisinger’s president and chief executive officer. He came to Geisinger as the executive vice president and chief medical officer in 2016, and in that capacity, he has overseen all aspects of patient care at Geisinger, working to improve the quality, affordability and experience of care delivered across the enterprise.

During his tenure at Geisinger, Dr. Ryu has cultivated a spirit of innovation and transformation across the organization, driving new approaches to some of healthcare’s most complex problems. These include initiatives like primary care redesign; Geisinger at Home, which brings healthcare services to patients in their home; and 65 Forward, our senior-focused, concierge healthcare centers. All of these are examples of Dr. Ryu’s commitment to making health easier by improving outcomes, engagement and affordability. This dedication to innovation for the health of our communities earned Dr. Ryu a top 20 spot on Modern Healthcare’s Most Influential Clinical Executives list for 2019.

Dr. Ryu was previously at Humana, where he was president of integrated care delivery and responsible for Humana’s owned and joint ventured care delivery assets, including a management services organization (MSO) assisting affiliated practices to adopt population health under value-based reimbursement methodologies.

Prior to Humana, Dr. Ryu held various leadership roles at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System, Kaiser Permanente (where he also practiced as an emergency medicine physician), and in government, at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and as a White House Fellow at the Department of Veterans Affairs. He was also a practicing corporate healthcare attorney with the international firm McDermott, Will & Emery.

Dr. Ryu was appointed to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC), an independent body legislatively tasked with advising Congress on payment and other policies governing health plans and providers serving Medicare beneficiaries. He has previously served in various other advisory roles, including board positions with My Health Direct Inc., a provider of digital care coordination solutions (acquired by Experian), as well as MCCI and JenCare, both clinic/MSO organizations managing the financing and delivery of care for Medicare Advantage members under full-risk payment models. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the White House Fellows Foundation and Association.

Dr. Ryu earned his BA degree from Yale University and his MD and JD from the University of Chicago. He completed his residency training in emergency medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

Joseph Impicciche, JD, MHA

Joseph Impicciche, JD, MHA, serves as President and Chief Executive Officer for Ascension, leading the Ascension Leadership Team to advance the health system’s Mission of providing compassionate, personalized care to all, especially those most in need. He previously served as President and Chief Operating Officer and earlier as Executive Vice President and General Counsel, providing legal counsel to the organization, Board of Directors and executive management.

Prior to joining Ascension, Mr. Impicciche was a partner in a private law firm with a concentration in public finance, business and tax law for nonprofit organizations. He also served as General Counsel for Ascension St. Vincent in Indianapolis.

As President and CEO of Ascension, Mr. Impicciche has been an advocate on numerous issues including the importance of greater access to care – especially for those who are underserved, gun violence as a public health issue, the need to reduce drug costs, and the use of technology to spur healthcare innovation. He also has represented Ascension at Scottsdale Institute and will speak in 2020 at The Twenty-Seventh Workshop for Bishops by The National Catholic Bioethics Center. Mr. Impicciche was named one of the Most Influential People in Healthcare by Modern Healthcare in 2019.

He is a member of the Indiana State Bar Association and the Missouri State Bar Association. He has served on the Boards of numerous organizations and currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Catholic Health Association of the United States, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul National Foundation and the St. Louis Regional Chamber.

Mr. Impicciche earned a Juris Doctorate from Indiana University School of Law, Indianapolis, and a Master of Healthcare Administration from Indiana University. He received a bachelor’s degree from Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Indiana, where he was a Lilly Scholar. He was an adjunct professor of commercial law at Indiana University School of Business for 15 years, and an adjunct professor at Indiana University Law School from 1999-2003. He also has taught at Saint Louis University School of Law.

Marna Borgstrom

Marna Borgstrom began her career at Yale-New Haven Hospital more than 30 years ago. Her varied roles have taken her from a post-graduate fellowship to various staff and management roles, to her 1994 promotion to the position of Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. In 2005, she was appointed President and CEO of both Yale-New Haven Hospital and Yale New Haven Health System.

The Yale New Haven Health System, which has $2 billion in revenues and employs 13,000 people in Connecticut, includes Bridgeport and Greenwich Hospitals as well.

She serves on several national boards, including VHA, Inc. in Dallas, the Council of Teaching Hospitals and Healthcare Executives Study Society. Closer to home, she serves on the Connecticut Hospital Association’s Board of Trustees and Greater New Haven Regional Leadership Council. She was previously Chair of the Connecticut Hospital Association’s Board of Trustees and served on the Boards of the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, the United Way of Greater New Haven and the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce’s Board and Executive Committee.

Marna has been the recipient of several awards recognizing her community involvement, including ADL’s Torch of Liberty Award, YMCA’s Women In Leadership Award, Junior Achievement Hall of Fame, New Haven Business Times’ 20 Noteworthy Women, Hill Health Center’s Leadership Award, Connecticut Women in Leadership Award and she is a member of the Gateway Community College Hall of Fame.
