State and county police are investigating the fatal shooting of Tywon Salters, an inmate who stole a correctional officer's gun and held two nurses hostage May 13 at Geneva, Ill.-based Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital, reports Daily Herald.

Here are five things to know.

1. After three hours of failed negotiations with Mr. Salters, Kane County SWAT team members entered the hospital and fatally shot him. The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force is investigating the SWAT team's use of force, according to the report.

2. The Kane County Sheriff's Office is evaluating the events leading up to the shooting, including how Mr. Salters disarmed a correctional officer, reports Daily Herald.

"We also plan on meeting with Delnor and their staff to find out what their concerns are and work together to do our best to see that something like this doesn't happen in the future," Lt. Pat Gengler of the Kane County Sheriff's Office told Daily Herald.

3. Mr. Gengler on May 14 confirmed the officer who shot Mr. Salters works for the North Aurora Police Department, according to the report. It is not known whether the officer is still on active duty.

4. Kim Waterman, a spokeswoman for Delnor Hospital, declined to comment on the state of the two nurses taken hostage. However, she did say hospital employees practice for emergency situations annually.

"All staff have mandatory annual training for an active-shooter situation," she told Daily Herald. "And then in addition to that, we have multiple drills throughout the year."

5. Delnor Hospital also enacted an employee assistance program after the hostage situation ended to offer counseling and support, according to Ms. Waterman.
