Nurse dies during shift at Self Regional Medical Center

A nurse died during a shift Friday morning at Greenwood, S.C.-based Self Regional Medical Center, according to the Index Journal.

The nurse was responding to an internal patient code around 6 a.m. and a few minutes later was found unresponsive in a stairwell after not reporting back to the nurse's clinical unit. Hospital workers attempted to revive the nurse, but were unsuccessful.

A Greenwood County Coroner said the nurse, whose identity was not immediately released, died of natural causes, according to the report.

"At this time, we are unable to release any additional details, as our focus is on the care of the family and the rest of the Self Regional staff who are in shock and saddened by this accident," a spokesman for Self Regional Medical Center Mark Hyatt told the Index Journal. "As additional information becomes available, we will provide further details at the appropriate time."
