Hospital treats trauma victims of Florida bridge collapse: 5 things to know

At least six people were killed and 10 trauma victims transported to Miami's Kendall Regional Medical Center for treatment after a pedestrian bridge collapsed near Florida International University, according to The New York Times.

Here are five things to know about the incident and hospital response.

1. The bridge, which was installed Saturday and connected the Miami-based school to the city of Sweetwater, collapsed at about 1:30 p.m. March 15. Authorities said at least eight vehicles were trapped under the bridge following the incident, according to the report. The bridge was not open to pedestrians at the time of the tragedy.

2. At least six people died following the collapse, including an FIU student, and authorities said that number could increase as search and rescue efforts continue, ABC News reports.

3. According to NYT, hospital officials said March 15 that 10 trauma victims, including two critical patients, were transported to Kendall Regional Medical Center. ABC News reports eight other victims went to the hospital with broken bones and bruises.

4. The investigation into the cause of the collapse is ongoing. National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Robert Sumwalt said in the NYT report the agency's investigation would focus on why a central support beam was not in place.

5. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., tweeted March 15: "The cables that suspend the #Miami bridge had loosened & the engineering firm ordered that they be tightened. They were being tightened when it collapsed today."
