Three of the largest health systems in Maryland and a large retirement community operator have joined together to build a statewide health information exchange network, according to a report by the Baltimore Sun.
The Chesapeake Regional Information System for Our Patients recently was approved for $10 million in state funding. The exchange is intended to allow healthcare providers, facilities and insurers securely share health information about patients, according to the report.
Johns Hopkins Medicine, MedStar Health and the University of Maryland Medical System, along with Erickson Retirement Communities, are leading the effort do develop the exchange, which is expected to be completed before a national exchange. Although a national exchange has been proposed, both the federal government and industry groups must agree to uniform standards.
According to the report, recent efforts in the state have been passed to speed healthcare providers' adoption of EHRs, including the passing of a bill to provide financial incentives to hospitals and physicians that implement EHRs by 2015.
