Former Detroit Medical Center CEO Mike Duggan Elected Mayor

Staff -

Residents of Detroit have elected Mike Duggan, the former CEO of Detroit Medical Center, as their new mayor, according to a Detroit News report.

Mr. Duggan captured 55 percent of the votes, according to the report. He will replace Dave Bing as mayor of a city that filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy earlier this summer.

Previously, Mr. Duggan was CEO of DMC, which was part of Vanguard Health Systems. It is now part of Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare Corp. after Tenet acquired Vanguard in October. Mr. Duggan resigned from his post in November 2012 to explore a mayoral bid. This past February, he officially launched his campaign, which focused on his turnaround experience at DMC.

Mr. Duggan, who was born in Detroit but lived in Livonia, Mich., also served as Michigan's Wayne County prosecutor for three years before joining DMC.
