California's Daughters of Charity in Talks for Downey Regional Medical Center

The Daughters of Charity Health System announced it has entered into exclusive negotiations to acquire Downey (Calif.) Regional Medical Center, a 199-bed nonprofit hospital in Southeast Los Angeles County, according to a system press release.

The hospital had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Sept. 2009.

Details of the deal were not disclosed, but the negotiations are expected to take several months because of Chapter 11 requirements and other complexities, said Rob Fuller, executive vice president and COO of Downey Regional, in the press release. The Daughters of Charity, a regional system of six hospitals along the California coast between Los Angeles and the Bay area, is based in Los Altos Hills, Calif.

The Daughters of Charity system also operates St. Francis Medical Center, which is five miles away from Downey Regional in Lynwood, Calif.
