Bill Would Require Arizona Hospitals to Confirm Patients’ Residency Before Admission

A public hearing will be held today on a state bill that would require Arizona hospitals to check patients’ immigration status, according to an Arizona Republic report.

Senate Bill 1405 would require hospitals to confirm patients’ legal residency before admitting him or her for non-emergency care. If the individual is in the country illegally, the hospital would have to notify federal immigration officers.

While the bill would allow hospitals to offer emergency care to illegal immigrants, the hospital would still have to report the individuals once the care was completed. Those hospitals that failed to comply with the law would face lawsuits, according to the report.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is holding the public hearing on the bill today at 2 p.m. MST.
