Baystate Health in Massachusetts Opens $296M "Hospital of the Future"

Springfield, Mass.-based Baystate Health held a dedication ceremony for its $296 million "Hospital of the Future" project at its Baystate Medical Center campus, according to a Republican report.

The 640,000-square-foot facility is named the MassMutual Wing in honor of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company's $3 million donation to the project. The wing houses the Davis Family Heart & Vascular Center, the D'Amour Family Healing Garden and an emergency department that is still under construction. Half of the wing is unfinished shell space that in the future could be developed into additional operating rooms or an expanded children's hospital, according to the report.

The Davis Family Heart & Vascular Center, which will open to patients Friday, includes six hybrid ORs, a 20-room unit for outpatient cardiovascular procedures, 96 private inpatient rooms and 32 cardiovascular critical-care rooms.

Meanwhile, Baystate Health nurses picketed at the dedication ceremony to protest the health system's contract negotiation tactics, according to a Sacramento Bee report. Baystate nurses from the Massachusetts Nurses Association/National Nurses United said the health system declared an impasse on contract negotiations, depriving them of their collective bargaining rights.
