Healthcare's biggest: 15 companies, events and hospitals to know

Only a few companies, hospitals and events can claim the title as one of healthcare's biggest.

For-profit hospital system: With 188 acute care hospitals, Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems is the largest for-profit hospital system in the U.S. based on number of acute care hospitals, according to data from the American Hospital Directory.  

Nonprofit hospital system: With 75 acute care hospitals, St. Louis-based Ascension is the largest nonprofit hospital system in the U.S. based on number of acute care hospitals, according to data from the American Hospital Directory.

For-profit hospital: Methodist Hospital in San Antonio has 1,561 beds, making it the largest for-profit hospital in the U.S. based on total number of beds, according to data from the American Hospital Directory.

Nonprofit hospital: With 2,391 beds, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City is the largest hospital in the U.S. based on total number of beds, according to data from the American Hospital Directory.

Children's hospital: With 605 beds, Texas Children's Hospital in Houston is the largest children's hospital in the U.S. based on number of beds, according to data from the American Hospital Directory.

Public hospital: With 1,678 beds, Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami is the largest public hospital in the U.S. based on number of beds, according to data from the American Hospital Directory.

Medical school (based on 2014 applicants): Drexel University in Philadelphia drew more applicants in 2014 than any other medical school. That year, the school had 14,622 hopefuls vying for admission, according to data from the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Medical school (based on 2014 enrollment in MD program): University of Illinois College of Medicine had total enrollment of 1,423 students in 2014, more than any other medical school, according to data from the Association of American Medical Colleges.

For-profit health insurer: With full year 2014 revenues of $119.8 billion and a greater market share than any other private payer, according to data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, UnitedHealthcare is the largest insurer in the U.S.

Pharmaceutical and biotech company (based on 2014 revenue): With total revenue of approximately $74.3 billion, Johnson & Johnson is the biggest pharmaceutical and biotech company in the U.S. based on 2014 revenue.

Retail clinic operator: CVS MinuteClinic is the biggest retail clinic operator in the nation with nearly 1,000 clinic locations.

Urgent care company: With more than 300 walk-in clinics in 38 states across the nation, Concentra is the largest occupational and urgent care medical practice in the U.S.

Fraud bust: A nationwide sweep by the Medicare Fraud Strike Force in June resulted in charges against 243 individuals, including 46 physicians, nurses and other licensed medical professionals, for their alleged participation in fraud schemes involving approximately $712 million in false billings. The takedown is the largest one ever coordinated by the Strike Force in terms of number of people charged and the loss amount.

Data breach in healthcare (based on number of patient records compromised): Indianapolis-based Anthem reported a data breach earlier this year that affected 78.8 million people, making it the largest healthcare data breach based on number of records comprised, as reported to the OCR.

Philanthropic act from a private donor (in 2015): David Koch's $150 million pledge to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City this year is the biggest philanthropic gift or pledge from a private donor so far this year.
