Becker's Hospital Review is pleased to name the following hospitals to the list of 81 Physician-Owned Hospitals to Know. Physician-owned hospitals are a unique breed, with just about 240 in the United States. The following hospitals are among the highest performers, having earned recognition from various sources, including Truven Health Analytics, Healthgrades, The Joint Commission, Press Ganey and CareChex.

All hospitals listed have at least partial ownership by a physician(s). Hospitals cannot pay to be included on this list and are presented in alphabetical order.

Advanced Surgical Hospital (Washington, Pa.). The 14-bed Advanced Surgical Hospital opened in 2010, spearheaded by eight physician investors. The hospital offers orthopedic procedures, general surgery, ENT procedures and plastic surgery. It has received two Healthgrades awards: the Joint Replacement Excellence Award in 2014 and the Outstanding Patient Experience Award in 2013.

Alhambra (Calif.) Hospital Medical Center. Originally established in 1924, the 144-bed Alhambra Hospital Medical Center has more than 600 employees and more than 300 physicians from 32 different specialties on staff. The hospital has received numerous Healthgrades awards in recent years for excellence in patient safety, general surgery, pulmonary care, gastrointestinal care and critical care.

Animas Surgical Hospital (Durango, Colo.). The 12-bed Animas Surgical Hospital opened in 2004 and offers a wide range of multispecialty services, from anesthesiology to spine surgery. From 2011 to 2013, Animas received the Prostatectomy Excellence Award from Healthgrades. Additionally, Healthgrades recognized the hospital with the Patient Safety Excellence Award and Outstanding Patient Experience Award in 2013, as well as the Prostate Surgery Excellence Award in 2014.

Arizona Spine & Joint Hospital (Mesa). Since its founding in 2003, this 23-bed specialty hospital has become widely known for a progressive approach to orthopedic, spine and podiatry surgeries. In 2013, it received Healthgrades' Patient Safety Excellence Award, Joint Replacement Excellence Award and Spine Surgery Excellence Award. The hospital received the latter two awards in 2012 as well.

Arkansas Heart Hospital (Little Rock). The 112-bed Arkansas Heart Hospital was founded in 1977 as a partnership between Charlotte, N.C.-based MedCath and several leading Arkansas cardiologists. It was the first heart hospital in the state and the second in the country. It has received numerous awards from Healthgrades, including the Patient Safety Excellence Award in 2012 and 2013, the Coronary Interventional Excellence and Vascular Surgery Excellence awards from 2012 through 2014 and the Outstanding Patient Experience Award from 2011 through 2013.

Arkansas Surgical Hospital (North Little Rock). Established in 2005, the 51-bed Arkansas Surgical Hospital performs orthopedic, spine, breast oncology and cosmetic surgeries, in addition to pain management procedures. It has received several Healthgrades awards, including the Patient Safety Excellence Award in 2013, the Joint Replacement Excellence Award from 2012 through 2014, the Spine Surgery Excellence Award from 2012 through 2014 and the Outstanding Patient Experience Award from 2011 through 2013. CareChex also ranked Arkansas Surgical Hospital among the top hospitals in the nation for overall surgical care quality in 2014.

Aurora BayCare Medical Center (Green Bay, Wis.). The 167-bed Aurora BayCare Medical Center opened in 2001 as a joint venture between Aurora Health Care and BayCare Clinic, the largest physician-owned specialty clinic in northeast Wisconsin. The hospital has received numerous awards from Healthgrades for excellence in women's health, general surgery, pulmonary care, cardiac care and coronary interventions. It has also received the Distinguished Hospital Award in 2012 and 2013 and the Outstanding Patient Safety Award from 2011 to 2013.

Avera Heart Hospital of South Dakota (Sioux Falls). The 55-bed Avera Heart Hospital — the region's first and only hospital dedicated solely to heart disease — saw its first patient in March 2001. Since then, Avera Heart Hospital has earned numerous awards for its efforts to deliver state-of-the-art care to cardiovascular patients. In 2013, Healthgrades recognized the hospital with the Coronary Interventional Excellence Award and Patient Safety Excellence Award. Avera has also received Healthgrades' Cardiac Surgery Excellence Award from 2012 through 2014, the Cardiac Care Excellence Award in 2012 and 2013 and the Outstanding Patient Experience Award from 2011 through 2013.

Bakersfield (Calif.) Heart Hospital. Since opening in 1999, Bakersfield Heart Hospital has earned a reputation for patient satisfaction and offering quality care. Among its top ranked specialties, this 47-bed hospital is known for cardiac care. In 2013, Bakersfield Heart Hospital was ranked in the top 10 percent nationally by CareChex for its cardiac care services. Bakersfield also received Healthgrades' Coronary Interventional Excellence Award in 2014. The hospital ranks among the top in the nation for its ability to prevent infections, medical errors and other complications, which was recognized by Healthgrades in 2013 when it presented Bakersfield the Patient Safety Excellence Award.

Baylor Heart and Vascular Hospital (Dallas). Established in 2002, the Baylor Heart and Vascular Hospital was the first hospital in north Texas devoted exclusively to the treatment of heart and vascular patients. In 2013, the 64-bed facility received Healthgrades' Patient Safety Excellence Award for its work. It has also been recognized with Healthgrades' Vascular Surgery Excellence Award for the last three years and the Outstanding Patient Experience Award from 2011 through 2013. The hospital has also received numerous other awards, including the Press Ganey Summit Award, recognizing excellence in patient satisfaction, in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Baylor Orthopedic and Spine Hospital at Arlington (Texas). The 24-bed Baylor Orthopedic and Spine Hospital at Arlington, which opened in 2010, specializes in comprehensive inpatient and outpatient treatment of orthopedic and spine disorders, from simple strains to complex spine surgeries. It received the Joint Replacement Excellence Award from Healthgrades in 2014. Healthgrades also recognized the hospital with the Patient Safety Excellence Award and Outstanding Patient Experience Award in 2013. Additionally, The Joint Commission has recognized Baylor Orthopedic and Spine Hospital at Arlington with its Gold Seal of Approval for its hip and knee replacement programs and spine care program.

Black Hills Surgical Hospital (Rapid City, SD). Established in 1997, Black Hills Surgical Hospital offers diagnostic imaging, pain management and a wide variety of surgical services, from orthopedic procedures to neurosurgery. The 26-bed hospital received both the Patient Safety Excellence Award and Outstanding Patient Experience Award from Healthgrades in 2013.

Central Louisiana Surgical Hospital (Alexandria). Central Louisiana Surgical Hospital's physicians offer procedures in several specialties, including gastroenterology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, podiatry and urology. Part of the surgical hospital's mission is to promote improved patient satisfaction, and it has been successful: Healthgrades awarded it the Outstanding Patient Experience Award in 2013 and 2014. The hospital also earned Healthgrades' Joint Replacement Excellence Award in 2013.

Charleston (W.Va.) Surgical Hospital. The 35-bed Charleston Surgical Hospital — the only physician-owned hospital in West Virginia — got its start as Shepherd Hospital in 1926. The hospital has 23 physician investors, and its scope of services includes ophthalmology, otolaryngology, orthopedics, gastroenterology, podiatry and other ancillary services.   

Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center (Akron, Ohio). Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center is a partnership between Akron-based Summa Health System and Crystal Clinic physicians. Crystal Clinic's board-certified surgeons perform more than 12,000 orthopedic procedures each year. The clinic received Healthgrades' Patient Safety Excellence Award in 2013, the Joint Replacement Excellence Award in 2013 and 2014, the Orthopedic Surgery Excellence Award each year since 2012 and the Spine Surgery Excellence Award in 2014.

Cypress Pointe Surgical Hospital (Hammond, La.). Cypress Pointe Surgical Hospital opened in 2010 and this 24-bed multispecialty hospital has been recognized as one of the top in the nation for overall patient satisfaction. In 2013, Cypress Pointe Surgical Hospital was recognized by Healthgrades for providing top ranked patient care, as it presented the hospital with the Outstanding Patient Experience Award. That same year, Cypress Pointe Surgical Hospital earned Press Ganey's Guardian of Excellence Award for patient satisfaction.  

Dakota Plains Surgical Center (Aberdeen, S.D.). The 15-bed Dakota Plains Surgical Center — built in 1998 — is a free-standing inpatient and outpatient surgery facility. The surgical center received Healthgrades' Joint Replacement Excellence Award in 2013 and 2014 and the Outstanding Patient Experience Award last year. In fact, according to recent HCAHPS data, Dakota Plains is in the top 30 for best overall patient-rated hospitals, as 91 percent of patients give an overall care rating of 9 or 10.

Doctors Hospital at Deer Creek (Leesville, La.). Since it opened in 2007, Doctors Hospital at Deer Creek has sought to safely and efficiently perform surgical procedures and maintain excellence of care. The 10-bed hospital offers inpatient and outpatient services, as well as respiratory therapy, laboratory, general radiology and 16-slice CT services. Doctors Hospital at Deer Creek received both the Patient Safety Excellence Award and Outstanding Patient Experience Award from Healthgrades in 2013.

Doctors Hospital at Renaissance (Edinburg, Texas). Doctors Hospital at Renaissance got its start in 1997 as an ambulatory surgery center. Today, the 506-bed hospital offers a range of medical services in more than 50 specialties and subspecialties. U.S. News & World Report identified the hospital as high-performing in seven adult specialties, including cancer, neurology & neurosurgery and cardiology & heart surgery. From Healthgrades, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance has received the Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award from 2011 through 2013, the Spine Surgery Excellence Award in 2012 and 2103 and the Critical Care Excellence Award in 2012.

Dupont Hospital (Fort Wayne, Ind.). Dupont Hospital is Fort Wayne's first hospital designed entirely by physicians, as well as the city's first all-digital hospital. The hospital, which opened in 2001, has more than 600 physicians on staff and more than 130 beds in service. In 2012, it was named one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals by Truven Health Analytics and a top performer on key quality measures by The Joint Commission. Dupont Hospital also earned Healthgrades' Outstanding Patient Experience Award in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

El Paso (Texas) Specialty Hospital. Specializing in orthopedic, joint replacement and spine surgeries, the 31-bed El Paso Specialty Hospital was the first specialty hospital in its region. The American Surgical Hospital Association named El Paso Specialty Hospital the Best Specialty Hospital in the Nation in 2011. More recently, it received Healthgrades' Joint Replacement Excellence Award in 2012 and 2014.

Fresno (Calif.) Surgical Hospital. Fresno Surgical Hospital originally opened as Fresno Surgery Center, an outpatient facility, in 1984. It was licensed as an acute care hospital in 1993 and took its current name in 2006. The hospital has earned various Healthgrades awards, including the Joint Replacement Excellence Award from 2012 through 2014, the Prostate Surgery Excellence Award in 2014, the Prostatectomy Excellence Award from 2011 through 2013 and Outstanding Patient Experience Award in 2013. Additionally, the hospital has been named by Healthgrades as one of America's 100 Best Hospitals for Joint Replacement for the past three years.

Grace Medical Center (Lubbock, Texas). The 123-bed Grace Medical Center has a 24/7 emergency room, five operating rooms and a six-bed intensive care unit. The hospital earned an Outstanding Patient Experience Award in 2012 and Prostatectomy Excellence Award in 2012 and 2013 from Healthgrades.

Green Clinic Surgical Hospital (Ruston, La.). Founded in 2003, the 13-bed Green Clinic Surgical Hospital serves as the flagship hospital for the Green Clinic Health System. The health system has 46 physicians and 18 specialties, ranging from internal medicine to hyperbaric oxygen therapy services. In 2013, Green Clinic Surgical Hospital received the Healthgrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award.

Harlingen (Texas) Medical Center. The 112-bed Harlingen Medical Center specializes in a wide range of care services, including bariatric, cardiology, gastroenterology, imaging, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics and vascular and endovascular surgery. Since 2010, the hospital has received 20 Healthgrades excellence awards, including the Patient Safety Excellence Award in 2012 and 2013 and the Orthopedic Surgery Excellence Award from 2012 through 2014.

Heartland Surgical Specialty Hospital (Overland Park, Kan.). The 48-bed Heartland Surgical Specialty Hospital, previously known as the Heartland Spine and Specialty Hospital, is a general medical and surgical hospital. It won both the Patient Safety Excellence Award and Outstanding Patient Experience Award from Healthgrades in 2013.

Hoag Orthopedic Institute (Irvine, Calif.). Hoag Orthopedic Institute, which opened in 2010, is a for-profit joint venture between the nonprofit Hoag Memorial Presbyterian Hospital and 35 orthopedic surgeons from two different orthopedic groups. The facility has 70 beds and nine operating rooms equipped for orthopedic cases. In 2013 and 2014, Hoag Orthopedic Institute received both the Joint Replacement Excellence Award and Orthopedic Surgery Excellence Award from Healthgrades.

Houston Northwest Medical Center. Founded in 1973, Houston Northwest Medical Center has a medical staff of approximately 600 who offer a variety of inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic imaging services. The hospital has received several Healthgrades awards in recent years, including the Neurosurgery Excellence Award in 2012 and the Maternity Care Excellence Award in both 2011 and 2012.

Indiana Orthopaedic Hospital (Indianapolis). Established in 2005, the Indiana Orthopaedic Hospital seeks to provide state residents with complete bone, muscle, joint and spine care in a patient-focused environment. In 2012, CareChex ranked the hospital No. 1 in the state for patient safety for major orthopedic surgery, overall hospital care, overall surgical care and joint replacement surgery. From Healthgrades, the hospital also received a Joint Replacement Excellence Award in 2014 and a Patient Excellence Award and Outstanding Patient Experience Award in 2013.  

Institute for Orthopaedic Surgery (Lima, Ohio). The Institute for Orthopaedic Surgery, which opened in 1998 as an ambulatory surgery center, became an acute-care hospital in 2002. The 12-bed hospital has received the Joint Replacement Excellence Award for three years in a row from Healthgrades, and received the Outstanding Patient Experience Award from Healthgrades in 2013.

Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital (Phenix City, Ala.). Led by CEO Mark Baker, Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital has 70 private patient rooms and six operating suites. The decorated hospital has received several national recognitions for clinical excellence, including Healthgrades' Joint Replacement Excellence Award and the Orthopedic Surgery Excellence Award for three years in a row. Jack Hughston Memorial has also received the Spine Surgery Excellence Award and the Outstanding Patient Experience Award from Healthgrades.

Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute (Leawood, Kan.). Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute is Kansas City's first and only orthopedic-dedicated hospital. Its physicians offer inpatient and outpatient services, MRI services, sports medicine treatment and back pain care. It is nationally recognized for excellence in orthopedic care: CareChex ranked the hospital in the top 100 in the nation for major orthopedic surgery in 2014, and Healthgrades has awarded the hospital the Joint Replacement Excellence Award for three years in a row.  

Kansas Heart Hospital (Wichita). Kansas Heart Hospital opened in 1999, after cofounder Greg Duik, MD, realized the area needed an independent specialized heart hospital. Today, the 54-bed hospital is 22-percent owned by physician referring investors, 29-percent owned by nonreferring investors while Wichita-based Via Christi Health System owns the remaining 49 percent. The hospital's physicians offer top-notch heart care, as it has received the Vascular Surgery Excellence Award from Healthgrades for the last three years.

Lewis & Clark Specialty Hospital (Yankton, S.D.). Founded in 2002 by local physicians, Lewis & Clark Specialty Hospital is a multispecialty surgical hospital, with physicians specializing in otolaryngology, general surgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics, podiatry and urology. Visitors to the six-bed hospital rank it high in terms of experience, as Lewis & Clark received the Outstanding Patient Experience Award from Healthgrades in 2013.

Lincoln (Neb.) Surgical Hospital. Lincoln Surgical Hospital was founded in 1994 as an ASC with two operating rooms for outpatient eye surgeries. Now, the 100-percent physician-owned hospital has nine ORs, 21 inpatient beds and four extended stay beds. It received the Joint Replacement Excellence Award from Healthgrades in 2012, 2013 and 2014. In addition, Healthgrades also awarded it the Patient Safety Excellence Award in 2013.

Louisiana Heart Hospital (Lacombe). Louisiana Heart Hospital is a 137-bed facility on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain. It is an acute-care facility with a special emphasis on the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease and disease and injuries affecting the spine. The hospital has earned the Outstanding Patient Experience Award three years in a row, most recently in 2014.

Lubbock (Texas) Heart Hospital. Lubbock Heart Hospital, which opened its doors in 2003, is licensed for 74 beds, including 16 cardiac coronary care beds. It expanded its service offerings in 2012 to include orthopedics and urology through a partnership with Symbion Healthcare. However, its focus on cardiac and vascular care remains strong, and Healthgrades has awarded it the Vascular Surgery Excellence Award for three years in a row. The hospital's other recent Healthgrades awards include the Pulmonary Care Excellence Award and the Outstanding Patient Experience Award.

Manhattan (Kan.) Surgical Hospital. Established in 2001, Manhattan Surgical Hospital has six operating rooms, 13 inpatient rooms, three endoscopy suites and five pain management suites. The hospital was opened with a commitment to patient satisfaction, and the hospital received the Outstanding Patient Experience Award from Healthgrades in 2013. In fact, 90 percent or more of the hospital's patients would "definitely recommend" the hospital to their friends, according to HCAHPS scores.

McBride Orthopedic Hospital (Oklahoma City). Earl McBride, MD, established McBride Clinic in 1923 in a small brick home. Now, 100-percent physician-owned McBride Orthopedic Hospital has 78 beds and a physician staff of 28. It has received several recognitions for excellence, including the Press Ganey 2013 Beacon of Excellence Award and the Guardian of Excellence Award as well as several nods from Healthgrades in 2014.

McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center (Springfield, Ore.). McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center was established in 1955 in response to the area's only hospital being blocked by periodic flooding. The partially physician-owned, 113-bed hospital received the Spine Surgery Excellence Award from Healthgrades in 2014, recognizing its excellent back and neck surgery outcomes.

Medical Center at Elizabeth Place (Dayton, Ohio). Medical Center at Elizabeth Place opened in 2006 and has since earned a reputation for quality care and an overall exceptional patient experience. This 26-bed facility offers the most advanced medical procedures, including general surgery, orthopedics, GI, ophthalmology, diagnostic imaging, gynecology, neurosurgery and urology.  

Midwest Orthopedic Specialty Hospital (Franklin, Wis.). Midwest Orthopedic Specialty Hospital is jointly owned by physicians and Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare. The 16-bed hospital, with six day surgery beds and six surgical suites, earned the 2013 Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award after it clinched the 95th percentile in all reporting categories from May 2012 through April 2013. In addition, MOSH received the Outstanding Patient Experience Award in 2013 from Healthgrades.

Midwest Surgical Hospital (Omaha, Neb.). Nineteen-bed Midwest Surgical Hospital opened in 2008 and quickly established itself as a quality healthcare provider. Patients rate the partially physician-owned hospital highly, as it has received the Outstanding Patient Experience Award from Healthgrades for the last two years. Midwest Surgical Hospital also has superior outcomes in spine surgery, as Healthgrades awarded it the Spine Surgery Excellence Award in 2014.

Mountain Vista Medical Center (Mesa, Ariz.). Mountain Vista Medical Center, opened in 2007, is a 178-bed, physician-owned hospital that is part of Franklin, Tenn.-based IASIS Healthcare. In years past, the hospital has been recognized for excellence in gastrointestinal and pulmonary care. In 2012, Mountain Vista received several Healthgrades awards, including the Gastrointestinal Care Excellence Award, the Pulmonary Care Excellence Award and the Distinguished Hospital Award for clinical Excellence, meaning it was in the top 5 percent nationally for overall clinical experience.

Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital (Omaha). Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital became the region's first hospital dedicated to orthopedic patients when it opened in 2004. It has a medical staff of more than 100 physicians from 16 different specialties. Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital was ranked as the No. 5 hospital in the state by U.S. News & World Report and Healthgrades recognized it in 2014 for joint replacement excellence. It also received the Outstanding Patient Experience Award in 2013 and 2014 and the Patient Safety Excellence Award in 2013 from Healthgrades.

North Carolina Specialty Hospital (Durham, N.C.). The 18-bed North Carolina Specialty Hospital first opened its doors in 1926. Physicians at the hospital span a variety of surgical specialties, including orthopedics, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, sports medicine and reconstructive surgery, to name a few. It earned the Outstanding Patient Experience Award from Healthgrades in 2014 and was also recognized for excellence in spine surgery by Healthgrades in recent years.

North Central Surgical Center (Dallas). Opened in 2005, physicians at North Central Surgical Center perform more than 11,000 procedures each year in its 10 operating rooms and three procedure rooms. The partially physician-owned hospital is an affiliate of Baylor Health Care System and managed by United Surgical Partners International. In 2014, North Central Surgical Center earned the Joint Replacement Excellence Award from Healthgrades as well as the Outstanding Patient Experience Award, which it also received in 2013.

OakLeaf Surgical Hospital (Eau Claire, Wis.). OakLeaf Surgical Hospital, established in 2001, is comprised of seven surgical suites, two GI suites, a pain management center and 13 inpatient beds. Sixty surgeons offer services at the hospital, and OakLeaf received both the Patient Safety Excellence Award and the Outstanding Patient Experience Award in 2013 from Healthgrades.

Oklahoma Heart Hospital (Oklahoma City). Oklahoma Heart Hospital has the unique distinctions of being the nation's first all-digital hospital and the state's first dedicated heart hospital. Surgeons at the hospital perform more than 1,100 surgeries each year. The hospital, a cooperative venture of the Oklahoma Cardiovascular Associates and the Sisters of Mercy Health System, has received the Vascular Surgery Excellence Award from Healthgrades for three years running.
 
Oklahoma Spine Hospital (Oklahoma City). One of the first physician-owned and operated specialty surgical spine hospitals in the nation, Oklahoma Spine Hospital has five large operating rooms, four major pain management procedure rooms and 18 inpatient beds. It has gained national recognition for its spine care expertise: Healthgrades awarded it the Spine Surgery Excellence Award in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
 
Oklahoma Surgical Hospital (Tulsa). Founded in 2001 as Orthopedic Hospital of Oklahoma, which provided care exclusively to orthopedic patients, the hospital became Oklahoma Surgical Hospital and expanded its offerings in 2007. It is licensed for 76 beds and has 20 operating rooms. Though no longer solely dedicated to orthopedic care, OSH retains its excellent standing in the specialty, as Healthgrades awarded it the Joint Replacement Excellence Award in 2014.

OrthoColorado Hospital (Lakewood). OrthoColorado, an 48-bed orthopedic specialty hospital, is a collaboration between orthopedic physicians and St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood. Most of the physician partners are part of Golden, Colo.-based Panorama Orthopedics, a group of 26 orthopedic surgeons. The hospital has been ranked in the 99th percentile for two patient satisfaction categories: doctors listening carefully to patients and staff doing everything they could to help with pain, according to HCAHPS data.  

Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin (Glendale). Opened in 2001, the Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin is a partnership between Columbia St. Mary's and a group of physician owners. The hospital has received national recognition for excellence in patient experience, as Healthgrades awarded it the Outstanding Patient Experience Award in 2013, and it has been in the top 1 percent in overall patient satisfaction as measured by Press Ganey.

OSS Orthopaedic Hospital (York, Pa.). The OSS Orthopaedic Hospital, owned and operated by OSS Health physicians, is the only free-standing hospital in the area specifically dedicated to orthopedic surgery. Its specialties include joint replacement, spine, shoulder, hand, wrist and elbow and foot and ankle surgery as well as sports medicine. Physicians at OSS Orthopaedic excel at joint replacement, as the hospital earned Healthgrades' Joint Replacement Excellence Award in 2014. It has also received the Outstanding Patient Experience Award from Healthgrades.

P&S Surgical Hospital (Monroe, La.). P&S Surgical Hospital was founded in 1997 as a joint venture between 19 physicians and St. Francis Medical Hospital. Now the group of 19 physicians has grown to 55 and offers services in 13 specialties. It earned the Joint Replacement Excellence Award from Healthgrades in 2013 and 2014. It earned the Patient Safety Excellence Award from Healthgrades in 2013 as well.

Parkview Ortho Hospital (Fort Wayne, Ind.). Parkview Ortho Hospital was the first hospital in northeast Indiana to be devoted to orthopedic surgery and post-surgical care. Its facilities include an inpatient unit and inpatient rehabilitation gym. Physicians at the hospital excel in their specialties, as the hospital has earned both the Joint Replacement Excellence Award and the Spine Surgery Excellence Award every year since 2012.

Patients' Hospital of Redding (Calif.). This surgical hospital with all-private patient rooms opened its doors in 1992. Its physicians and staff pay strict attention to infection control and the hospital's infection rate is one of the lowest in the nation, as it has never reached 1 percent. Patients' Hospital of Redding has received the Outstanding Patient Experience Award from Healthgrades twice, in 2013 and 2014.

Quail Creek Surgical Hospital (Amarillo, Texas). Quail Creek Surgical Hospital is part of Physicians Surgical Hospitals, which also includes Panhandle Surgical Hospital in Amarillo. A group of physicians owns the hospital in an affiliation with Amarillo-based BSA Health System. The hospital is nationally recognized for quality care, as it has earned Healthgrades' Joint Replacement Excellence Award for three years in a row. It has also received Healthgrades awards for excellence in gynecologic surgery and patient safety.

Rothman Orthopaedic Specialty Hospital (Bensalem, Pa.). The Rothman Orthopaedic Specialty Hospital — established in 2009 — focuses only on orthopedic and spine cases. The 24-bed, 65,000-square-foot-facility has six fully-equipped operating rooms and is the only surgical specialty hospital in partnership with the Rothman Institute, which is internationally recognized for excellence in orthopedic science and technology. The hospital received Healthgrades' Joint Replacement Excellence Award in 2013 and 2014.

Salina (Kan.) Surgical Hospital. Opened in 1999, Salina Surgical Hospital is a joint venture between local physicians and Salina Regional Health Center. It consists of 16 inpatient rooms, four operating rooms and two special procedure rooms. Physicians offer care in 13 specialties, and the hospital has been nationally recognized for joint replacement excellence for the past three years by Healthgrades. It also offers a great patient experience, as recognized by Healthgrades in 2013 and 2014.

Same Day Surgery Center (Rapid City, S.D.). This six-bed surgical specialty hospital opened in 2001 and now serves 4,500 patients per year through inpatient and outpatient procedures. Since its opening, Same Day Surgery Center has earned a reputation for quality care and for patient satisfaction. In 2013, Same Day Surgery Center received Healthgrades' Outstanding Patient Experience Award as well as the Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award for patient satisfaction.

Sioux Falls (S.D.) Surgical Hospital. Since 1985, Sioux Falls Surgical Hospital has provided quality care to its patients. This 35-bed multispecialty hospital offers innovative and personalized care through its three specialty centers — surgery, pain management and imaging. Sioux Falls Surgical Hospital also provides primary care and digestive health through its partnership with Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Midwest Family Care. Sioux Falls Surgical Center ranks among the top in the nation for patient satisfaction, as it received the Outstanding Patient Experience Award from Healthgrades in 2013.   

Siouxland Surgery Center (Dakota Dunes, S.D.). This 40-bed multispecialty surgical hospital offers neurosurgery, otolaryngology, gynecology, pain management and orthopedic services, and several of Siouxland Surgery Center's specialties have been nationally recognized. In 2014, the hospital received the Joint Replacement Excellence Award from Healthgrades. The hospital has also earned the Spine Surgery Award from Healthgrades for two years running. Along with quality care, Siouxland Surgery Center has a reputation for patient satisfaction. In 2013, the hospital earned Healthgrades' Outstanding Patient Experience Award and the Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award for patient satisfaction.   

Specialists Hospital Shreveport (La.). This 15-bed orthopedic and spine surgery hospital opened in 2007. Specialists Hospital Shreveport is ranked as one of the top hospitals in the U.S. for spine surgery, according to Healthgrades' 2014 rankings, and for the past four years the hospital has been a Healthgrades' Five-Star Recipient for total knee replacement and spinal fusion surgery. Along with excellent care, Specialists Hospital Shreveport is known for its superior patient experience, as it was ranked among the top 10 percent of hospitals in the country for patient satisfaction by Healthgrades in 2013.  

St. Vincent Heart Center of Indiana (Indianapolis). St. Vincent opened its doors in 2002 as one of the nation's first freestanding heart specialty hospitals and the first in the Indianapolis area. Since its opening, St. Vincent has become a nationally ranked hospital, as it is one of the nation's top 50 cardiovascular hospitals according to Truven Health Analytics. This heart hospital has also received the Cardiac Care Excellence Award from Healthgrades for the past eight years. St. Vincent has been ranked No. 1 in the state for cardiology services by Healthgrades, and it also received the Press Ganey Summit award for being a top performing facility.  

Stanislaus Surgical Hospital (Modesto, Calif.). This 23-bed multispecialty surgical hospital opened in 1985 and has since become a nationally top-ranked facility. For its 2013-14 Best Hospitals list, U.S. News & World Report ranked Stanislaus Surgical Hospital as a top 50 hospital in California. Stanislaus Surgical Hospital also has nationally recognized specialties, as it has received the Joint Replacement Excellence Award from Healthgrades for three years running. Along with quality care, Stanislaus is also known for patient satisfaction, which Healthgrades recognized when it gave Stanislaus the Patient Safety Excellence Award in 2013.  

Summa Western Reserve Hospital (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio). Since 2008, Summa Western Reserve Hospital has been providing services in medicine, surgery, emergency care, cardiology, extended and physical rehabilitation. This 105-bed hospital has earned numerous awards both on the local and national stage. The hospital was named best in surgery by Consumer Reports in 2013, and it received the Silver Plus Quality award from the American Heart Association for its "Get With the Guidelines" initiative that same year.

Surgical Specialty Center of Baton Rouge (La.). This 14-bed multispecialty hospital offers many services including surgical, imaging and pain management. Surgical Specialty Center of Baton Rouge has nationally recognized specialties, as it has received the Prostatectomy Excellence Award from Healthgrades two times, in 2011 and 2013. The hospital offers exceptional patient experience as well, which was recognized in 2013 when it received the Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award for patient satisfaction.   

Texas Health Center for Diagnostics & Surgery (Plano). Since 2005, this multispecialty surgical hospital has offered excellence in surgical care, imaging services and other special procedures. This 18-bed facility is known as one of the top gynecologic surgery hospitals in the nation, as it received the Gynecology Surgery Excellence Award from Healthgrades in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Texas Health Center for Diagnostics & Surgery also offers a superior patient experience, which was recognized in 2013 when Healthgrades presented the hospital with the Outstanding Patient Experience Award.

Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southlake (Texas). This 16-bed multispecialty hospital opened its doors in 2004. Texas Health Harris has been recognized nationally for superior outcomes in knee and hip replacement resurfacing, as it received the Joint Replacement Excellence Award from Healthgrades both in 2012 and in 2013. Texas Spine & Joint Hospital (Tyler). This 20-bed multispecialty hospital opened in 2002. Texas Spine & Joint is nationally recognized as one of the top spine surgery hospitals in the country by earning the Spine Surgery Excellence Award from Healthgrades for the past two years. In 2014, Texas Spine & Joint also received the Joint Replacement Excellence Award from Healthgrades, which recognizes hospitals for superior outcomes in knee and hip replacement and resurfacing. The hospital is ranked among the top in the nation for its ability to prevent infections, medical errors and other complications, which was recognized when it received the Patient Safety Excellence Award from Healthgrades in 2013.  

St. Thomas Hospital for Spinal Surgery (Nashville, Tenn.). This 23-bed spine surgery hospital offers nationally top ranked care along with an exceptional patient experience. St. Thomas Hospital for Spinal Surgery is known for its superior outcomes in back and neck surgery, as it has received the Spine Surgery Excellence Award from Healthgrades for three years running. The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano (Texas). This 116-bed facility is known for its quality care, as it was one of only 87 recipients of the 2011 Summit Award in two areas — emergency department and inpatient satisfaction. The Summit Award is one of Press Ganey's most prestigious awards, honoring hospitals that sustain an overall rank above the 95th percentile for at least the past three consecutive years. The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano has also been nationally recognized for its level of patient satisfaction, as it received Healthgrades' Outstanding Patient Experience Award in both 2011 and 2013.  

The Hospital at Westlake Medical Center (Austin). This 23-bed medical and surgical hospital has nationally ranked surgical specialties. In 2014, The Hospital at Westlake Medical Center received Healthgrades' Prostate Surgery Excellence Award, which recognized the hospital for its superior outcomes in the surgical removal of part or the entire prostate to treat prostate cancer or an enlarged prostate. The hospital also received Healthgrades' Prostatectomy Excellence Award from 2011 to 2013 and the Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award in 2013. The Physicians Centre Hospital (Bryan, Texas). This 16-bed multispecialty hospital is top ranked for its quality care. The Physicians Centre Hospital received the Joint Replacement Excellence Award from Healthgrades in both 2012 and 2013. The Physicians Centre Hospital also has top-performing specialties, as it received the Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award from Healthgrades in 2011. Along with excellent care, the hospital offers an exceptional patient experience which Healthgrades recognized when it presented the hospital with the Outstanding Patient Experience Award in 2013.

Trinity Hospital of Augusta (Ga.). Physicians at Trinity Hospital of Augusta, a 105-bed hospital, offer many surgical procedures, some of which have been recognized on the national scale. The hospital received the Prostate Surgery Excellence Award from Healthgrades in 2014 and the Prostatectomy Excellence Award in 2013, as well as the Joint Replacement Excellence Award in 2013. USMD Hospital at Arlington (Texas). Founded in 2003, this 32-bed hospital offers many surgical procedures and has repeatedly earned national praise for them. In 2014, USMD at Arlington earned the Prostate Surgery Excellence Award from Healthgrades. The hospital also earned HealthGrade's Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award and Prostatectomy Excellence Award from 2011 to 2013.
