Lubbock (Texas) Heart Hospital.
Lubbock Heart Hospital is a 74-bed heart specialty center that opened in 2003 and has since received several awards for cardiovascular services, ranging from cardiac surgery to coronary interventions. Lubbock Heart Hospital has been rated by HealthGrades as the best in the Lubbock region for overall cardiac services for six years in a row and is one of the top 10 hospitals in Texas for overall cardiac and cardiology services. Additionally, the hospital has won awards from HealthGrades for excellence in patient safety, pulmonary care, vascular surgery and women's health.

McBride Orthopedic Hospital (Oklahoma City). Founded in 1919 by Earl McBride, MD, the 78-bed McBride Orthopedic Hospital is considered one of the best in the country for orthopedic surgeries. For the past three years, HealthGrades recognized McBride as of the 100 best hospitals in America for orthopedic surgery, and it has also won an Outstanding Patient Experience Award for three straight years. In 2012, CareChex also rated the hospital 59th among all hospitals for orthopedic care and 74th for major orthopedic surgery.

McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center (Springfield, Ore.). In 1949, periodic flooding of the Willamette River occasionally blocked access to the area's only hospital, located in Eugene, Ore. Consequently, in 1955, McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center opened with 35 beds to provide healthcare access to local residents. It has since expanded to a 113-bed, investor-owned medical center. Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems operates the hospital, and there are more than 60 physician owners. HealthGrades has awarded the hospital five awards over the past three years, and in June 2012, it became the county's first and only nationally accredited chest pain center.

Mountain Vista Medical Center (Mesa, Ariz.). Heart care is at the center of the 178-bed Mountain Vista Medical Center. Mountain Vista has a comprehensive heart care program and advanced technology for cardiac catheterization, cardiovascular surgery and cardiac rehabilitation. It also provides services in emergency medicine, women's health, pain management, wound care and diagnostic imaging. In 2012, the hospital, which is operated by Franklin, Tenn.-based IASIS Healthcare, received five-star ratings from HealthGrades in seven different clinical areas.

Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital (Omaha). Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital opened in 2004 as the region's first hospital dedicated to orthopedic care, and it specializes in the diagnostic, surgical and rehabilitative needs of patients with adverse musculoskeletal conditions. In U.S. News & World Report's 2011-12 hospital rankings, the 24-bed Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital ranked 38th in the United States for orthopedics and as the number one overall hospital in the Omaha/Council Bluffs metropolitan area. The hospital has 20 physician owners, and the medical staff is comprised of more than 100 physicians across 15 specialties.

North Carolina Specialty Hospital (Durham, N.C.). North Carolina Specialty Hospital opened its doors in 1926, and today, it stands as an 18-bed hospital that treated more than 11,400 patients in 2011. The hospital offers surgical services in orthopedics, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, sports medicine, podiatry, interventional radiology, pain management and more. North Carolina Specialty Hospital is part of Chicago-based National Surgical Hospitals, which awarded the facility the President's Award for Satisfaction in 2012.

OakLeaf Surgical Hospital (Eau Claire, Wis.). More than 60 surgeons in 15 specialties offer surgical procedures at OakLeaf Surgical Hospital, which serves more than 30 communities in western Wisconsin. According to the most recent HCAHPS survey from CMS, OakLeaf ranked among the best hospitals in the country, as 95 percent of patients rated the hospital a nine or 10. In 2012, HealthGrades designated OakLeaf as a five-star facility for gynecologic surgery.

Oklahoma Heart Hospital (Oklahoma City). The 99-bed Oklahoma Heart Hospital opened in 2002 as the first all-digital hospital in the country and focuses exclusively on preventing and treating cardiovascular disease. As of 2012, 65 physicians had an ownership interest in the heart hospital, which had some of the highest patient satisfaction ratings of all hospitals in the country. In CMS' most recent HCAHPS survey, 95 percent of patients rated the hospital a nine or 10. Oklahoma Heart Hospital also recently opened its new south campus, which was a three-story, $11 million project.

Oklahoma Spine Hospital (Oklahoma City). Oklahoma Spine Hospital is one of the first physician-owned-and-operated specialty surgical spine hospitals in the country. The 18-bed hospital has five operating rooms and four procedure rooms for major pain management. Considered as one of the 100 best specialty care hospitals for spine surgery in the country by HealthGrades, Oklahoma Spine Hospital is also among the best for patient satisfaction. CareChex also ranked the hospital 42nd in the country for overall spinal surgery care in 2012.

Oklahoma Surgical Hospital (Tulsa). Originally the Orthopedic Hospital of Oklahoma, the 76-bed Oklahoma Surgical Hospital was established in 2001 to provide inpatient and outpatient services for several surgical procedures, including orthopedics, neurosurgery, urology, otolaryngology and others. In 2012, CareChex ranked Oklahoma Surgical Hospital first in Oklahoma for overall hospital care and overall surgical care, and for the 2013 ratings, the hospital remained in the top three for both. For the past two years, HealthGrades gave Oklahoma Surgical Hospital its Spine Surgery Excellence Award.

P & S Surgical Hospital (Monroe, La.). Surgical care has been offered to residents of northeast Louisiana at P & S Surgical Hospital since 1986. The hospital is actually connected to St. Francis Medical Center, the largest hospital in northeast Louisiana, via a walkway in case patients need further care. The 22-bed hospital was a 2011 Press Ganey Summit Award winner, and in 2011, it ranked among the top 50 hospitals in the nation for patient quality ratings from the HCAHPS survey.

Parkview Ortho Hospital (Fort Wayne, Ind.). Parkview Ortho Hospital, the first specialty hospital in northeast Indiana devoted to orthopedic surgery and post-surgical care, has 37 inpatient beds. The hospital and physicians also partner with Ortho NorthEast, which is an orthopedic specialty center with several clinics throughout northeast Indiana. In 2012, HealthGrades rated Parkview Ortho Hospital number one in Indiana for both joint replacement and spine surgery. It is also among the top 5 percent in the country for quality care in those two services.

The Physicians Centre Hospital (Bryan, Texas). With 16 beds, six operating rooms and numerous diagnostic imaging devices, The Physicians Centre Hospital is known for joint replacement and gynecologic surgery excellence, as designated by HealthGrades. For the past three years, the hospital has received the Joint Replacement Excellence Award. It also captured the Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award in 2011. CareChex rated the hospital among the top 200 in the country for overall surgical care in 2013.

Quail Creek Surgical Hospital (Amarillo, Texas). Quail Creek Surgical Hospital is part of Physicians Surgical Hospitals, which also operates Panhandle Surgical Hospital. The hospital won the Press Ganey Summit Award three years in a row due to the hospital's high patient satisfaction ratings. HealthGrades also named Quail Creek as one of the top 100 specialty care hospitals in America for joint replacements, and it has also received awards for excellence in gynecologic surgery and spine surgery.

St. Vincent Heart Center of Indiana (Indianapolis). When it comes to cardiac care, few hospitals compare to St. Vincent Heart Center of Indiana. Thomson Reuters named the hospital to its 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals for 2012, and HealthGrades has given it the Cardiac Care Excellence Award for the past eight years. HealthGrades also named it one of the top specialty care institutions for cardiac care and coronary intervention and ranked it at the top in Indiana for cardiology services since 2006. St. Vincent Heart Center of Indiana has a wide range of affiliated physician providers, including the St. Vincent Medical Group, one of the largest cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgical practices in the United States.

Salina (Kan.) Surgical Hospital. Developed in March 1998 and opened in November 1999, Salina Surgical Hospital is a joint venture between local physicians and Salina Regional Health Center. The 16-bed hospital performs more than 8,000 surgical procedures every year, and the medical staff covers 13 different specialties, including anesthesia, gastroenterology, orthopedics and ophthalmology. In CareChex's top quality rankings for 2013, Salina Surgical Hospital was listed 135th among all hospitals in the country for overall surgical care, and it also placed in the top 250 for overall hospital care.

Sioux Falls (S.D.) Specialty Hospital. Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital, formerly known as Sioux Falls Surgical Hospital, opened in 1985 and provides a wide range of surgical services. It has five-star ratings from HealthGrades for spinal fusion procedures as well as hip replacements, and the hospital ranks among the 50 best hospitals in the country for patient satisfaction ratings, based on CMS' HCAHPS survey.

Specialists Hospital Shreveport (La.). The 19 physicians of the Musculoskeletal Institute of Louisiana and the Spine Institute of Louisiana control 100 percent of Specialists Hospital in Shreveport. Orthopedics is one of the hospital's main specialties, and for the past two years, it has attained the Joint Replacement Excellence Award from HealthGrades. Specialists Hospital Shreveport is also the first and only hospital in Louisiana to offer the MAKOplasty robotic-arm assisted joint replacement system for minimally invasive orthopedic procedures.

Stanislaus Surgical Hospital (Modesto, Calif.). Originally built as an ambulatory surgical center in 1985, Stanislaus Surgical Hospital converted to a physician-owned, acute-care hospital in 2000. The 23-bed hospital, which was a founding member of Physician Hospitals of America, the trade association for physician-owned hospitals, averages more than 15,000 cases per year. Stanislaus Surgical Hospital is considered to be one of the top 100 hospitals in America for joint replacement procedures, according to HealthGrades, and it has also earned accolades for its gynecologic surgery.

Summa Western Reserve Hospital (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio). Summa Western Reserve Hospital is a 105-bed, for-profit, full-service hospital with outpatient departments in six neighboring Ohio cities. The hospital is also a teaching facility that sponsors a graduate medical education residency teaching program through the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. Hospital President and CEO Robert Kent, DO, recently received the 2012 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award for his leadership in guiding the hospital. The hospital's physician-led model allowed for the creation of the Lung Health Program, the region's only low-dose CT screening for early detection of possible lung cancer that is not restrictive for age or smoking history.

The Surgical Hospital at Southwoods (Boardman, Ohio). The Surgical Hospital at Southwoods started as a freestanding ambulatory surgery center in 1996 and became an acute-care inpatient hospital in 2009. The hospital has established relationships with more than 200 physicians in the community, and its staff turnover rate is less than 2 percent annually. The Surgical Hospital at Southwoods tied Animas Surgical Hospital for the best patient ratings in the country, as 97 percent of patients rated the hospital a nine or 10 on a scale. This was also recognized by Press Ganey, which awarded the hospital with the 2012 Summit Award for patient satisfaction.

Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southlake. A joint venture between Arlington-based Texas Health Resources and a group of local physicians, Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southlake has become an archetype for both clinical quality and hospital culture. The hospital is routinely ranked as one of the best companies to work for in Texas. In 2011, the Dallas Business Journal ranked Texas Health Southlake second among medium-sized companies for best places to work, and in 2012, it was named one of the top 100 hospitals for patient experience by WomenCertified, a consumer rating agency for women.

Texas Orthopedic Hospital (Houston). Texas Orthopedic Hospital opened in 1995, and it has continually received some of the highest recognitions for its work in orthopedic care over the past several years. Texas Orthopedic Hospital was ranked as one of the top 50 hospitals in the country in orthopedics from 2009 through 2011 by U.S. News & World Report, and in 2011, it was ranked as the fifth-highest rated hospital in the Houston metro area. Texas Orthopedic Hospital is affiliated with Nashville, Tenn.-based Hospital Corporation of America, and its 150-plus physician investors are part of Fondren Orthopedic Group.

Texas Spine & Joint Hospital (Tyler). The 20-bed Texas Spine & Joint Hospital specializes in orthopedic and spine surgery and has nearly 200 physicians on its medical staff. Texas Spine & Joint ranks in the 99th percentile nationally for patient satisfaction, according to Press Ganey. The hospital is also among the best hospitals for spinal fusion. For 2013, CareChex rated Texas Spine & Joint number one in Texas for both spinal fusion and spine surgery, and it is ranked in the top 1 percent of the country for patient safety in spinal fusion. Texas Spine & Joint also received recognition for overall hospital care, overall medical care, overall surgical care, joint replacement, orthopedic care and major orthopedic surgery from CareChex.

Thousand Oaks (Calif.) Surgical Hospital. Thousand Oaks Surgical Hospital is a 21-bed hospital that opened in 2005 as a joint partnership between 46 physicians and Cirrus Health, an ASC and short-stay hospital management company. HealthGrades ranked it among the 100 best hospitals in the country for prostatectomy excellence. In December 2012, Nashville, Tenn.-based Hospital Corporation of America, owner of Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center, which is also in Thousand Oaks, completed its purchase of Thousand Oaks Surgical. Los Robles Hospital and Thousand Oaks Surgical began sharing information in a due diligence process in July 2012 after Thousand Oaks Surgical physicians, who own nearly half of the hospital, voted in favor of an agreement. The hospital remains a partial physician-owned facility.

Trinity Hospital of Augusta (Ga.). Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems operates Trinity Hospital of Augusta, and dozens of physicians also claim an ownership interest in the 231-bed, full-service hospital. For three straight years, HealthGrades gave Trinity Hospital the Joint Replacement Excellence Award, and for the past two years, the hospital has earned HealthGrades' Prostatectomy Excellence Award. This summer, Trinity Hospital was named to the Georgia Hospital Association's Partnership for Health and Accountability Core Measures Honor Roll, an accolade that only 17 other hospitals in Georgia received. Hospitals on the honor roll have effective methods of treatment for CMS' value-based purchasing core measures.

Tulsa (Okla.) Spine & Specialty Hospital. Tulsa Spine & Specialty Hospital is a 37-bed facility specializing in spine, orthopedics, pain management, otolaryngology, gynecology, gynecologic oncology and six other services. It first opened in 2002 and has become a renowned institution for spine surgery in particular. HealthGrades named Tulsa Spine as one of the 100 best spine surgery hospitals in the country in 2011. CareChex also rated the hospital third overall in the country for spinal surgery quality and eighth in spinal fusion quality. In 2011, Tulsa Spine made The Journal Record's inaugural list of the fastest-growing, privately held companies in the Tulsa metropolitan area.

USMD Hospital at Arlington (Texas). USMD Hospital at Arlington, which was founded by physicians in 2003, is a regional leader in robotic-assisted surgeries. Since it opened, the hospital has performed more than 4,500 robotic-assisted surgeries, and it was the first organization in the Dallas/Forth Worth area to offer the da Vinci robotic radical prostatectomy. HealthGrades has recognized USMD Hospital's proficiency in prostatectomy the past three years, and in 2012, it was named one of the 100 best hospitals in America for prostatectomy. CareChex also ranked USMD Hospital among the top 120 hospitals in the nation for overall quality in women's health procedures.
