100 hospitals and health systems with great oncology programs | 2018

Becker's Hospital Review is pleased to release the 2018 edition of the "100 hospitals and health systems with great oncology programs" list. A version of this list has been published every year since 2012.

The hospitals and health systems selected for this list are at the forefront of cancer treatment and research. Many of the institutions featured have earned National Cancer Institute comprehensive cancer center designation and ranked among the top hospitals for cancer care by U.S. News & World Report and CareChex.

This list also includes cancer centers with busy research institutes, multiple clinical trials and safety designations that exceed national benchmarks. Hospitals and health systems highlighted here have invested in growing oncology departments and regional cancer centers, providing an important service to patients locally and nationally.

Advocate Lutheran General Hospital (Park Ridge, Ill.). The three-story Advocate Cancer Institute at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital is part of 27-hospital Advocate Aurora Health, a merged entity between Downers Grove, Ill.-based Advocate Health Care and Milwaukee-based Aurora Health Care. The cancer center at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital was one of the first Midwest hospitals to offer breast cancer patients early diagnosis through 3D mammography. Today, experts at the Advocate Cancer Institute spearhead more than 200 cancer studies and clinical trials to develop new and effective therapies.

Atlantic Health System Cancer Care (Morristown, N.J.). Each year, more than 6,000 patients receive cancer treatment from the 250-specialist team at Atlantic Health System Cancer Care. The cancer network spans 11 counties in northern and central New Jersey and includes the flagship Carol G. Simon Cancer Center at the health system's Morristown and Overlook medical centers. In 2018, CareChex ranked Overlook Medical Center No. 4 in New Jersey for cancer care.

Atrium Health (Charlotte, N.C.). Atrium Health's Levine Cancer Institute has more than 25 cancer care locations across North Carolina and South Carolina. Each year, more than 11,000 patients seek cancer treatment at the health system, which features amenities like the region's only adult blood and marrow transplant unit. Providers with the Levine Cancer Institute's Adult Stem Cell Transplant Program, created in 2012, have performed 271 transplants since 2014.

Aurora Health Care (Milwaukee). More than 160 physicians provide cancer care to patients at Aurora Health Care, which is part of 27-hospital Advocate Aurora Health, the merged entity comprising Downers Grove, Ill.-based Advocate Health Care and Aurora. The health system's Aurora Research Institute offers more than 150 cancer clinical trials and can bring those clinical trials to all Aurora cancer clinics through a federal grant. In 2017, Aurora Cancer Care's multidisciplinary pancreatic center at Milwaukee-based Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center became the first center in Wisconsin to earn the National Pancreas Foundation's Pancreatic Cancer Center designation.

Banner Health (Phoenix). In partnership with Houston-based University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Banner Health opened its Gilbert, Ariz.-based Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center in 2011. In August 2018, the organizations extended their partnership to open a cancer program at North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley. The center also participates in research and has ongoing clinical trials for brain cancer, breast cancer, colorectal cancer and more.

Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University (St. Louis). The Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine includes 450 physicians and research scientists who care for around 10,000 newly diagnosed cancer patients every year. This year, U.S. News & World Report listed the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University No. 15 on its top 50 oncology programs. CareChex also ranked its affiliate, Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital in St. Louis, in the top 100 in the nation for cancer care excellence. Washington University received $47.6 million in funding from the National Cancer Institute in 2018 so far. Overall, Siteman-affiliated researchers and physicians receive more than $150 million in annual cancer research and related training grants.

Baylor Scott & White (Dallas). The Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center at Baylor Scott & White has served patients in the Dallas region for nearly 40 years. With $41.5 million in National Cancer Institute funding in 2018 so far, Baylor's nationally recognized clinical care team is paired with a social service network that provided more than 694 behavioral health oncology visits and music therapy sessions to more than 2,529 cancer patients in 2017.

Beaumont Health (Southfield, Mich.). The cancer program at Beaumont Health is among a select few organizations partaking in the National Cancer Institute's Community Oncology Research Program. Participation in the program grants Beaumont access to top national cancer research. In 2017, Beaumont added 7,216 new patients to its oncology network. Beaumont provides mammography services at 17 locations in Metro Detroit. Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak has the state’s only operational proton therapy center and is designated as a Blue Cross Center of Distinction for the Treatment of Complex and Rare Cancers. Advanced radiation treatments pioneered or available at Beaumont include adaptive radiation therapy, image-guided radiation therapy, high-dose rate brachytherapy, hyperthermia therapy and gamma knife – all designed to destroy cancer with precision and fewer side effects.

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (Boston). The Cancer Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center comprises 18 clinical teams and a Cancer Research Institute. In 2016, the system added 4,130 patients to its oncology network. Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center's Leon V. and Marilyn L. Rosenberg Clinical Cancer Center is the only cancer center in Massachusetts to be awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. In 2018, U.S. News & World Report ranked the health system No. 49 on its list of the best hospitals in the nation for cancer care.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles). Providers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center's Samuel Oschin Cancer Center treat more than 60 types of cancer. The facility includes a 24/7 infusion center with 18 private rooms. Since its bone marrow and transplant program launched around 20 years ago, more than 1,500 stem cell and bone marrow transplants have occurred there, at a rate of around 140 transplants per year. In 2018, U.S. News & World Report ranked Cedars-Sinai Medical Center No. 41 in the nation for cancer care.

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. More than 70 pediatric oncologists with the Cancer Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia treat patients at five locations. U.S. News & World Report ranked the hospital No. 2 in the nation for pediatric oncology in its 2018-19 rankings, and the hospital recently received $29.1 million in National Cancer Institute funding. Several health insurers, including UnitedHealth and Blue Cross Blue Shield, recognize Children's Hospital of Philadelphia as a Cancer Center of Excellence.

Children's National Health System (Washington, D.C.). Children's National Health System is the only health system in Washington, D.C., specializing in the treatment of pediatric patients. As one of 200 organizations participating in the Children's Oncology Group, Children's National has access to National Cancer Institute-supported pediatric cancer research. In addition to focusing on clinical care, the health system supports researchers developing tumor-specific vaccines to attack neuroblastoma and other cancers. U.S. News & World Report ranked Children's National Health System No. 7 in the nation for pediatric cancer care.

Children's Hospital Colorado (Aurora). Children's Hospital Colorado is a member of New Approaches in Neuroblastoma Therapy, a group that provides access to early-phase clinical trials of new therapies. Children's Hospital Colorado offers pediatric hematology, oncology and bone marrow transplant programs, and has received funding from the National Institutes of Health for ongoing research studies. Over 300 new cancer diagnoses are made at the hospital annually. U.S. News & World Report ranked Children's Hospital Colorado No. 8 in the nation for pediatric cancer care.

CHI Franciscan Cancer Care (Tacoma, Wash.). CHI Franciscan Cancer Care is part of Catholic Health Initiatives and provides patient access to research though it's CHI Institute for Research and Innovations. CHI Franciscan Cancer Care offers national clinical trials to its patients through its partnership with the National Cancer Institute Community Oncology Research Program. CHI Franciscan's cancer program is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.

Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center's Cancer and Bone Diseases Institute was established in 2009 and offers patients a hereditary cancer center, advanced cancer therapies and a cancer survivorship center. More than 1,000 physicians, nurses, scientists and researchers provide care for patients at the center. The hospital's Proton Therapy Center is one of two in the U.S. providing focused radiation treatment that minimizes damage to areas surrounding tumors. U.S. News & World Report ranked Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center No. 1 in the nation for pediatric cancer care.

City of Hope (Duarte, Calif.). City of Hope was founded in 1913 as a tuberculosis hospital and today is one of 49 comprehensive cancer centers in the U.S. Over 14,000 bone marrow and stem cell transplants have been performed at City of Hope. More than $135.1 million in research grants was awarded to City of Hope in the 2017 fiscal year, and U.S. News & World Report named the hospital among its top 50 hospitals for cancer care for 2018-19.

Cleveland Clinic. Cleveland Clinic Cancer Center has 21 specialty cancer programs. In 2017, Cleveland Clinic opened the Taussig Cancer Institute, a facility where over 250 physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals provide cancer care to patients. Cleveland Clinic is a member of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute partnership organization that supports cancer research efforts. U.S. News & World Report ranked Cleveland Clinic No. 5 in the nation for cancer care for 2018-19

Cone Health (Greensboro, N.C.). Cone Health has over 100 locations across Greensboro and the surrounding community, including six hospitals. More than 500 cancer specialists treat patients at Cone Health Cancer Centers, which were awarded the American Society of Clinical Oncology's Quality Oncology Practice Initiative designation for excellence in cancer care. The health system pays particular attention to creating a "healing environment" at its centers, which feature healing gardens, meditation spaces and artwork from local artists. The Greensboro-based Cone Health Cancer Center at Wesley Long also earned the American College of Radiology accreditation in radiation oncology.

Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center. The Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center has a five-year survival rate of 87.5 percent for all cancer types compared to the National Cancer Institute's national benchmark of 82.8 percent. Beyond traditional pediatric cancer treatment, the hospital also supports research into advanced therapies and treatment for patients with relapsed, recurrent or refractory cancer at the Advancing Childhood Cancer Therapies Clinic. Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center was rated the top pediatric cancer program in New England and No. 3 in the country by U.S. News & World Report for 2018-19.

The Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center (Boston). The Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center is a teaching hospital for Boston-based Harvard Medical School and is a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. The Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center has 12 specialized treatment centers and four locations in Massachusetts. Specialists at the center, which was ranked No. 4 in the nation for cancer care by U.S. News & World Report in 2018-19, have conducted over 830 clinical trials, and was ranked No. 4 in the country for cancer care.

The Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (Lebanon, N.H.). Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center's Norris Cotton Cancer Center opened in 1972 and was rural New England's first regional cancer center. The Norris Cotton Cancer Center was designated as a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute for its cancer prevention, research, education and detection programs. In addition to providing cancer care, the center includes 250 active research projects led by 135 cancer research scientists. More than $68 million in grants supports projects at the cancer center each year.

Duke University Hospital (Durham, N.C.). Duke University Hospital is designated a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute and is part of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, an alliance of the country's top cancer centers dedicated to improving patient care. Over 150 oncologists treat patients at Duke University Hospital's six locations and throughout its regional network of 20 community cancer programs in North Carolina. Duke University Hospital was ranked a top 50 hospital in the nation for cancer care by U.S. News & World Report for 2018-19.

Emory Winship Cancer Institute (Atlanta). Emory Winship Cancer Institute, an affiliate of Atlanta-based Emory Healthcare, got its start in 1937 as the Robert Winship Memorial Clinic. Clinicians at Emory Winship Cancer Institute see more than 17,000 patients annually. In 2017, the cancer institute enrolled more than 700 oncology patients in more than 250 clinical trials. As the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in Georgia, Emory University received $23.2 million in funding from the National Cancer Institute for 2018 so far.

Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center (Knoxville, Tenn.).The Thompson Cancer Survival Center at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center delivers cancer care at its primary location in downtown Knoxville, and at its facilities in West Knoxville, Oak Ridge and Sevierville, Tenn. The center was the first to bring cancer clinical trials to East Tennessee more than 25 years ago. The center has 12 board-certified oncologists practicing out of eight locations in and around Knoxville.

Fox Chase Cancer Center (Philadelphia). As one of the nation's first cancer hospitals, Fox Chase Cancer Center can trace its roots back to 1904. In 1974, the hospital became one of the first cancer centers to earn comprehensive designation from the National Cancer Institute. In 1995, the hospital became a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, which comprises leading cancer centers collectively working to set the standards for best clinical practices in oncology. Fox Chase Cancer Center reported 111,468 outpatient visits and served 8,864 new patients in 2017.

Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin (Milwaukee). Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin hosts more than 130 clinical cancer trials at any given time. Froedtert Hospital was an early adopter of dedicating infusion space for early clinical trials. Since its launch in 2013, specialists at the Nicholas Family Foundation Translation Research Unit, where Froedtert's early trials are managed, have seen more than 500 patients over the course of 6,000 patient visits. In 2016, CMS accepted the cancer center at Froedtert as an official participant of the Oncology Care Model, which endorses highly coordinated oncology care and episodic payments for chemotherapy administration.

Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center (Washington, D.C.). This National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center is the research engine driving clinical cancer care at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in the District of Columbia. The Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center was founded in 1970 and is named for legendary football coach Vince Lombardi, who was treated for cancer at Georgetown University Hospital. The facility has since evolved into a cancer center boasting more than 240,000 square feet of clinic and research space.

Hackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center. John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center is a comprehensive cancer program staffed by more than 1,200 team members collaborating in a highly subspecialized and multidisciplinary environment. Over the last 25 years, clinicians at the center have performed more than 6,500 bone marrow transplants. Currently, the center houses more than 350 ongoing clinical trials focused on improving cancer treatment.

Houston Methodist. Houston Methodist offers patients cancer treatments at seven different locations and hosts dozens of clinical trials. The center is home to clinics dedicated to less common oncology subspecialties, such as suspicious lung nodules and triple-negative breast cancer. In 2016, the National Cancer Institute awarded Houston Methodist's research institute $9 million to establish a research center focused on the physics of cancer immunotherapy.

Indiana University Health Medical Center (Indianapolis). For its 2018-19 rankings, U.S. News & World Report placed Indiana University Health Medical Center among the top 50 hospitals in the nation for cancer care. The hospital works in partnership with the IU School of Medicine to offer patients access to breakthrough clinical trials. The Indiana University Health Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center in Indianapolis, which collaborates with the medical center, is the only patient care cancer center in Indiana to earn designation from the National Cancer Institute.

Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore). The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins was founded in 1973 and is home to multiple specialty departments offering access to some of the most innovative and advanced oncology therapies in the world. For its 2018-19 rankings, U.S. News & World Report named Johns Hopkins Hospital the No. 6 hospital in the nation for cancer care. For 2018, the National Cancer Institute granted $50 million in funding to support cancer research at Johns Hopkins.

Johns Hopkins Children's Center (Baltimore). When it opened its doors in 1912, Johns Hopkins Children's Center became the first pediatric hospital in the nation to be affiliated with an academic research institution. The center's 205-bed main building opened in 2012. The hospital's oncology program comprises centers devoted to bone marrow transplants, sarcoma, leukemia and long-term survivorship, among other subspecialties. For its 2018-19 rankings, U.S. News & World Report ranked Johns Hopkins Children's Center No. 10 in the nation for pediatric cancer care.

Kaiser Permanente (Oakland, Calif.). Kaiser Permanente cancer patients have access to the system's integrated EHR, which matches a patient's history to ongoing clinical research opportunities conducted through the entire 39-hospital health system. In 2016, the health system ranked No. 1 in the nation for breast cancer and colorectal cancer screening, according to care effectiveness measures compiled by the National Committee for Quality Assurance Quality Compass. In 2017, Kaiser Permanente clinicians performed 2 million colorectal cancer screenings and nearly 1 million mammograms.

Lifespan (Providence, R.I.). Lifespan features the Lifespan Cancer Institute at Rhode Island Hospital. Composed of three hospitals and an ambulatory surgery center, the cancer institute reported 4,117 cases in 2017. The institute also features the COBRE Center for Cancer Research Development, which was launched in 2002 with an $8.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. The COBRE center received a five-year $11.2 million renewal from NIH in July 2009 and used that funding to develop cancer-preventing therapies.

Loyola University Health System (Maywood, Ill.). Loyola's Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center includes clinical areas, a day hospital and education spaces to deliver patients the best treatment possible. Oncology specialists at the center treat patients with several forms of cancer, including colorectal cancer and bone cancer. The Sarcoma Program at Loyola Medicine brings together multidisciplinary experts to care for patients and serves as a conduit to related clinical trials. In July, Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine launched a new department of cancer biology, focused on studying cancer at the molecular level.

Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston). Massachusetts General Hospital's cancer center features more than 37 different cancer programs and has a network of 29 multidisciplinary disease networks throughout New England and the southeastern U.S. The hospital's cancer center received $41.4 million in funding from the National Cancer Institute and was a founding member of Boston-based Harvard Medical School's consortium of institutes designated as an NCI comprehensive cancer center. U.S. News & World Report ranked Massachusetts General Hospital the No. 12 hospital in the nation for cancer care in 2018-19.

Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minn.). Mayo Clinic Cancer Center treats more than 120,000 patients annually between its three locations in Rochester, Phoenix and Jacksonville, Fla. In addition to providing an array of clinical services devoted to cancer care, Mayo Clinic Health System received $45.8 million in National Cancer Institute funding in 2018 and holds the National Cancer Institute comprehensive cancer center designation. U.S. News & World Report ranked Mayo Clinic's Rochester-based hospital No. 3 in the nation for cancer care in 2018-19.

Mayo Clinic Hospital (Phoenix). Mayo Clinic Health System, including locations in Rochester, Minn., Phoenix and Jacksonville, Fla., reports serving around 120,000 cancer patients annually. U.S. News & World Report ranked the health system's Phoenix location as No. 11 in the nation for cancer care in 2018-19, and CareChex ranked Mayo Clinic Hospital in the top 50 U.S. hospitals for medical excellence in cancer care.

Mayo Clinic Jacksonville (Fla.). Mayo Clinic Jacksonville is one of three hospitals in Mayo Clinic's Cancer Care Network. The network is designated a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute. Altogether, the center's clinical providers treat 120,000 cancer patients annually. U.S. News & World Report ranked the health system's Jacksonville location No. 30 in the nation for cancer care in 2018-19.

Medical University of South Carolina Medical Center (Charleston). The Hollings Cancer Center at the Medical University of South Carolina is the only cancer center in the state to hold the National Cancer Institute's comprehensive cancer center designation. NCI has awarded the hospital $19.4 million in funding for cancer research in 2018. The Hollings Cancer Center staffs more than 120 physicians and scientists and supports a robust community outreach program to assist the state's large rural population. U.S. News & World Report ranked the Hollings Cancer Center at the Medical University of South Carolina Medical Center the No. 24 hospital in the nation for cancer care in 2018-19.

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York City). Established in 1884, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center holds the distinction of being the world's oldest private cancer center. U.S. News & World Report ranked Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center No. 2 in the nation for cancer care in 2018-19. The hospital has received $102.1 million from the National Cancer Institute so far in 2018 and holds NCI's comprehensive cancer center designation. In 2017, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center touted 1,148 physicians and 3,721 nurses on staff. The center reported 23,506 inpatient stays and 722,238 outpatient visits last year.

Mercy Hospital Springfield (Mo.). Mercy Hospital Springfield features the CH Chub O'Reilly Cancer Center. The center offers 50 different treatments and several technological advances, such as robotic surgery. CareChex ranked the hospital No. 18 in the nation for medical excellence in cancer care. Mercy has several satellite oncology programs in the greater Springfield area and has a comprehensive resource center for patients' educational needs.

Michigan Medicine (Ann Arbor). The University of Michigan's Rogel Cancer Center is designated a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute. The center is a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, a nonprofit alliance of 27 leading cancer centers. U.S. News & World Report ranked Rogel Cancer Center in a tie for the No. 15 hospital in the nation for cancer care for 2018-19.

Moffitt Cancer Center (Tampa, Fla.). Established in 1981, Moffitt Cancer Center is ranked No. 8 in the nation for cancer care by U.S. News & World Report. The cancer center takes a multifaceted approach to providing cancer care, partnering with several organizations in research and community support. Moffitt Cancer Center has 206 beds as well as a 36-bed blood and marrow transplant unit on its main campus. In addition to the main campus, Moffitt also has the Moffitt McKinley Outpatient Center, which opened in 2015 to meet the demands for outpatient services.

Montefiore Medical Center (New York City). With 531 specialists in its oncology program, the Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer care center in New York's Bronx and Westchester counties. Montefiore is highly active in the research arena, conducting more than 250 clinical studies on solid tumors and hematologic malignancies. Montefiore has robust research efforts through its partnership with New York City-based Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Mount Sinai Hospital (New York City). As a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center, Mount Sinai's Tisch Cancer Institute is affiliated with 329 physicians who aim to treat patients with various stages of cancer. To reach more patients in need of oncology support, Mount Sinai created its Cancer Network, which comprises eight locations throughout New York state and New Jersey. In addition to providing advanced patient care, the institute has a focus on research, and the National Cancer Institute provided $32.2 million to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai so far in 2018. U.S. News & World Report listed Mount Sinai among its top 50 hospitals for cancer care in 2018-19.

NewYork-Presbyterian (New York City). NewYork-Presbyterian is home to three oncology programs, including the National Cancer Institute-designated Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center of New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center. Between the three programs, NewYork-Presbyterian specialists treat around 7,500 newly diagnosed adult and pediatric cancer patients each year. Currently, physician-scientists and researchers at the health system lead more than 500 clinical trials involving thousands of patients. U.S. New & World Report ranked NewYork-Presbyterian among the top 50 hospitals for cancer care in 2018-19.

Nebraska Medicine (Omaha). In June 2017, Nebraska Medicine opened its Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, which features a 24/7 Infusion Center that serves as a treatment facility and provides urgent care services. As the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Nebraska, the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center comprises more than 200 specialists and researchers. The center consists of the Suzanne and Walter Scott Cancer Research Tower, which is 10 stories tall and houses 98 laboratories and the 108-bed C.L. Werner Cancer Hospital. The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center is a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.

NorthShore University HealthSystem (Evanston, Ill.). NorthShore University HealthSystem's Kellogg Cancer Center is designated by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois as a Blue Distinction Center for Complex and Rare Cancers. Additionally, NorthShore is certified by the American Society of Clinical Oncology's Quality Oncology Practice Initiative as a premier medical provider. Since 1981, the Commission on Cancer has accredited NorthShore as an Academic Comprehensive Cancer Program. Conducting numerous clinical trials, NorthShore's cancer program includes 37 oncologists, 37 cancer surgeons and four radiation oncologists. The cancer center is affiliated with Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic and works closely with the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.

Northwestern Memorial Hospital (Chicago). In partnership with Chicago-based Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University, Northwestern Memorial Hospital is ranked on U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals for Cancer 2018-19 list. The hospital is ranked among the top 50 hospitals nationally for cancer care and as the No. 1 hospital in the Chicago metro area. The National Cancer Institute designated the hospital a comprehensive cancer center, and Northwestern has received $52.2 million in NCI funding in 2018 so far. Northwestern Memorial Hospital is a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, an alliance of 27 leading cancer centers.

NYU Langone Medical Center (New York City). NYU Langone's Perlmutter Cancer Center is a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center and has a focus on research. With a phase 1 clinical trials program and diverse clinical trial portfolio, the Perlmutter Cancer Center has a 127-physician oncology team and has grown to treat patients at more than 20 locations across New York. CareChex ranked NYU Langone Hospitals No. 1 in New York for cancer care for 2019, and U.S. News & World Report recognized it as one of the top 50 hospitals for cancer care in 2018-19.

Ochsner Medical Center (New Orleans). For more than 70 years, Ochsner Medical Center has advanced cancer research and new cancer treatments. Its specialists treat more than 15,000 cancer patients annually. The Gayle and Tom Benson Cancer Center, located on Ochsner Medical Center's campus, is one of the health system's newly renovated buildings. It features a hematology oncology clinic and chemotherapy infusion clinic. The cancer center also partners with LSU Health Sciences Center for research purposes. In total, Ochsner has 11 cancer centers throughout the state. In 2018, Ochsner was recognized by the Quality Oncology Initiative Certification Program.

The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center-Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (Columbus). In 1990, The Ohio State opened the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, the first freestanding cancer hospital in the Midwest. Today, the hospital has grown to comprise more than 300 cancer researchers and 200 oncologists. Many professional societies have recognized OSUCCC-James including the National Cancer Institute, which designated the hospital as a comprehensive cancer center. So far in 2018, the hospital received $40.3 million in NCI funding. For 2018-19, OSUCCC-James was listed among the top 50 of U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals for Cancer.

Oregon Health and Science University Hospital (Portland). A National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center, OHSU Knight Cancer Institute has received $38.4 million in NCI funding so far in 2018. Nike co-founder Phil Knight and his wife also invested in the center, pledging $500 million to the cancer center to match an additional $500 million OHSU raised in 2015 with the support of 10,000 donors. Today, OHSU Knight Cancer Institute physicians and researchers partake in more than 400 clinical trials.

Orlando Health (Florida). In partnership with the University of Florida Health in Gainesville, Orlando Health UF Health Cancer Center researchers conducted more than 66 clinical trials and enrolled nearly 4,000 patients in 2017. With one of the 24 proton centers in the United States, Orlando Health UF Health Cancer Center treats more than 80,000 patients and has been doing so for more than 20 years. Florida health officials bestowed the center with the Florida Cancer Center of Excellence Award in 2018, making it the only institution in central Florida to earn the award. The American Society of Clinical Oncology has also certified Orlando Health UF Health Cancer Center for the past six years through its quality oncology practice initiative certification program.

Penn Medicine (Philadelphia). Penn Medicine's Abramson Cancer Center employs 400 basic, translational and clinical scientists. Physicians at the center conduct 90,000-plus outpatient visits, more than 11,800 inpatient discharges, 37,000-plus chemotherapy treatments, and more than 66,000 radiation treatments annually. The center's continued success has earned it designation as a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute since 1973. As part of Penn Medicine, Philadelphia-based Hospitals of the University of Pennsylvania-Penn Presbyterian and Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center were listed on U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals for Cancer 2018-19 list.

Presence Resurrection Medical Center (Chicago). Presence Resurrection Medical Center is a 337-bed academic teaching hospital and the flagship hospital for Chicago-based Presence Health. It is home to a cancer center accredited by the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer, as well as a breast center accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers and recognized as an American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Center of Excellence. The hospital offers on-site infusion care and support services, and its team takes a multidisciplinary team-based approach to cancer care for each patient.

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (New Brunswick, N.J.). Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital's 103-bed cancer center is the flagship facility for Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, which is the state's only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center and one of 70 in the country. The cancer center is accredited by the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer. It offers same-day chemotherapy and is the only program in New Jersey with clinical trials for cancer patients. Its Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital has a dedicated pediatric hematology/oncology unit.

Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center (Buffalo, N.Y.). Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center was founded in 1898 as the first institution in the U.S. to focus solely on cancer research. Over a century later, the institute is still one of the nation's leading centers for oncology. U.S. News & World Report ranked Roswell Park among the top 50 hospitals in the nation for cancer care in 2018, and it has been recognized by the National Cancer Institute as a comprehensive cancer center since 1974. In fiscal 2018, Roswell Park has over 39,000 patients under active care. It counts 5,068 hospital admissions and more than 248,000 outpatient visits. In addition to providing daily care, Roswell Park is committed to research and advancing cancer care delivery. The institute has partnerships with the State University of New York at Buffalo, and it is part of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, an alliance of 27 cancer centers dedicated to creating and improving guidelines for cancer care. Roswell Park received $33.45 million in NCI funding in 2018.

Rush University Medical Center (Chicago). Rush University Medical Center is known for outstanding cancer care. It was named among the top 50 hospitals in the nation for cancer care by U.S. News & World Report in 2018. Not only is it an accredited cancer center by the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer, but it has also won the commission's Outstanding Achievement Award four times, most recently in 2014. Rush offers a variety of services for cancer patients, including stem cell and bone marrow transplants, integrative therapies, genetic counseling, and an urgent care walk-in clinic dedicated to cancer patients. As a teaching hospital, Rush hosts residencies in radiation oncology and nuclear medicine, as well as fellowships in hematology/medical oncology, orthopedic oncology, hospice and palliative medicine.

Sanford USD Medical Center (Sioux Falls, S.D.). Sanford USD Medical Center's cancer center was established in 1982. The Sanford Cancer Center is one of the hospital's five centers of excellence and now serves as a regional referral hub for cancer patients in Sioux Falls and the surrounding area. The hospital is dedicated to detection, prevention, treatment and innovation. Sanford Cancer Center boasts a nearly 80 percent screening rate for breast cancer and more than 70 percent screening rate for colorectal cancer. It also runs more than 75 active clinical trials as part of the National Cancer Institute's Community Oncology Research Program.

Scripps Health (San Diego). Scripps Health's five hospital campuses each offer cancer screening and prevention, diagnostic services, surgery, chemotherapy and infusion. Its facilities boast accreditation from the American College of Radiology, and its three dedicated breast care centers have earned distinction from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. In 2016, Scripps partnered with Houston-based MD Anderson Cancer Center to form the Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center, a clinically integrated cancer program designed to serve eight counties stretching from San Diego to the border of Mexico.

Seattle Cancer Care Alliance at University of Washington Medical Center. Seattle Cancer Care Alliance is powered by a unique combination of research teams and cancer specialists from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle Children's and UW Medicine. The alliance was created 20 years ago. For the last 13 years, the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance at UW Medical Center has made the top 10 of U.S. News & World Report's best hospitals for cancer care. The alliance offers more than 300 clinical trials and continues to expand its offerings. In April, the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance opened a clinic dedicated to patients with genetic hematologic malignancies.

Seidman Cancer Center at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. Though the 375,000-square-foot Seidman Cancer Center is just seven years old, University Hospitals has run a robust cancer program dating back to the 1940s, when it was part of the Cleveland Cancer Consortium. Today, Seidman Cancer Center is part of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and one of 12 freestanding cancer centers in the nation designated by the National Cancer Institute as a comprehensive cancer center. Seidman Cancer Center is also part of the 27-member National Comprehensive Cancer Network, an alliance of leading cancer centers that develop guidelines for cancer care. Seidman Cancer Center ranks No. 28 on U.S. News & World Report's 2018 rankings for cancer care.

Stanford (Calif.) Hospital. Stanford Hospital has a thriving oncology program for both clinical care and research. Stanford University has received $71.3 million in National Cancer Institute funding so far in 2018, and was a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, a group of 26 cancer centers across the country dedicated to improving cancer care guidelines. U.S. News & World Report ranked Stanford No. 14 in the nation for cancer care, and CareChex ranks the hospital's parent system, Stanford Health Care, No. 5 in the nation for medical excellence in cancer care. Stanford plans to open a new cancer hospital next year.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (Memphis, Tenn.). St. Jude Children's Research Hospital treats 8,500 pediatric patients each year, paying for all treatment, travel for patients and parents, housing for up to four family members. The hospital has received $33.8 million in National Cancer Institute funding so far in 2018. St. Jude is renowned for its pediatric cancer care and innovative research. Treatments developed at the hospital have contributed to childhood cancer survival rates have growing to more than 80 percent. Survival rates were just 20 percent when St. Jude opened its doors in 1962. St. Jude continues this legacy today through projects like the Pediatric Cancer Genome Project, which was launched in 2010.

St. Luke's Boise (Idaho) Medical Center. St. Luke's Boise is the flagship of St. Luke's Health System, a stalwart in the community for cancer care. It is home to the St. Luke's Mountain States Tumor Institute, which is the largest cancer care provider in the region and the only pediatric cancer treatment center in the state. The institute is also the state's only federally sponsored center for hemophilia and its only blood and marrow transplant program. It is certified for high-quality cancer care by the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative, which is affiliated with the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The tumor institute's unique offerings include a high-risk breast clinic, which provides at-risk women with individualized screening and management options. St. Luke's was named No. 21 in the nation for medical excellence in cancer care in 2019 by CareChex.

Temple University Hospital (Philadelphia). The Fox Chase Cancer Center at Temple University Hospital is one of 70 centers in the U.S. designated as a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute. It has earned a three-year accreditation with commendation by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. The center participates in several clinical trials and research, including antineoplastic drug development and the use of biologic response modifiers to treat malignancy.

Texas Children's Hospital (Houston). Texas Children's Hospital's Cancer and Hematology Centers is the largest pediatric cancer and hematology center in the U.S. It is currently running 200 therapeutic clinical trials with 350 researchers and staff in 46 different labs. Some of its unique offerings include the Lymphoma Program, the only program in the country focused on childhood lymphoma and lymphoproliferative disorders, and the Cancer Genetics and Genomics Program, which helps identify genetic predispositions to childhood cancer and offers DNA diagnostic studies, screening tests for at-risk families, and counseling services.

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (Philadelphia). Tied for No. 26 in U.S. News & World Report's 2018-19 rankings for adult cancer care, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital's medical oncology program encompasses a breast center, an infusion center and a multidisciplinary cancer clinic. The hospital is closely affiliated with the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute-designated clinical cancer center for excellence in cancer care and research. The Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center recently unveiled the Asplundh Cancer Pavilion, an 86,000-square-foot comprehensive cancer center.

TriStar Centennial Medical Center (Nashville, Tenn.). The TriStar Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute within the TriStar Centennial Medical Center offers leading clinical trials for cancer care, including its Phase 1 Drug Development Unit. The center launched an adult and pediatric bone marrow transplant program in 2006 and since then has completed more than 500 transplants. Sarah Cannon, which is part of HCA Healthcare's Sarah Cannon Research Institute, is the first and only hospital in Tennessee to receive radiation oncology accreditation by the American College of Radiology.

UAB Hospital (Birmingham, Ala.). The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center located in the four-state area of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas. The center is home to 330 physicians and researchers, and it treats about 5,000 new patients each year. In addition, the center currently runs more than 180 cancer-related clinical trials for a wide array of therapies, diagnostics and preventive options, and it offers opportunities to participate in community-based trials for cancer survivorship research.

UC Irvine (Calif.) Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. The UC Irvine Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in Orange County, Calif. The center comprises scientists and clinicians from more than 32 departments across six schools at UC Irvine, and the center has four themed research programs: molecular diagnostics and therapeutics; onco-imaging and biotechnology; systems, pathways and targets; and cancer control.

UC San Diego Health. As San Diego's only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, UC San Diego Health runs Moores Cancer Center, a U.S. News & World Report top 45 oncology program, according to 2018-19 rankings. Established in 1978, the center boasts $39 million in National Cancer Institute funding so far in 2018. Among the center's faculty are 16 members of the prestigious National Academy of Sciences. The center's research on cancer prevention and smoking cessation has led to public policy changes affecting tobacco advertising.

UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital (Aurora).The UCHealth Cancer Center-Anschutz Medical Campus in the Denver metro area tied for 26th on U.S. News & World Report's 2018-19 ranking of best oncology programs. The center members are involved in six research programs: cancer cell biology; cancer prevention and control; developmental therapeutics; hormone-related malignancies; lung, head and neck cancer; and molecular oncology. The center also operates the Lung Cancer SPORE — Specialized Programs of Research Excellence — a National Cancer Institute-funded research program.

UCLA Medical Center (Los Angeles). UCLA Medical Center's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, established in late 1960, ranked No. 21 on U.S. News & World Report's best oncology programs for 2018-19. With $62.8 million in funding from the National Cancer Institute so far in 2018, the cancer center boasts more than 500 physicians and scientists and treats more than 20,000 patients annually. The center also offers numerous support services beyond clinical care, such as holistic approaches to healing and wellness provided by UCLA Health and the Simms/Mann-UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology.

UCSF Medical Center (San Francisco). The Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at UC San Francisco Medical Center — which U.S. News & World Report ranked No. 8 in the nation for cancer care in 2018-19 — operates the Cancer Immunotherapy Program and Cancer Immunotherapy Clinic to give patients access to cutting-edge cancer immunotherapies. The center also allows patients to enroll in one of its clinical trials ranging from gynecologic to pediatric cancers. In 2019, the center will open its Precision Cancer Medicine Building to deliver novel, personalized treatments.

UF Health Shands Hospital (Gainesville, Fla.). UF Health Shands Cancer Hospital offers several inpatient services ranging from bone marrow transplants to neurosurgical trauma services. The hospital's Oak Hammock Concierge Center serves as a welcoming space for patients and is steps away from the Garden of Hope, a green space on the hospital's campus. UF Health Shands also operates the Criser Cancer Resource Center, which is designed to promote patient education and wellness. CareChex ranked the hospital's cancer program No. 14 in the nation for 2019.

United Hospital (St. Paul, Minn.). United Hospital, which serves more than 200,000 patients annually, is home to a branch of the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute, which has eight locations and serves patients in Minnesota and western Wisconsin. The hospital is affiliated with the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, a multidisciplinary organization focused on biomarker-driven cancer research.

University of California, Davis Medical Center (Sacramento). UC Davis is designated as a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute, and affiliated physicians care for over 10,000 adults and children annually. The center has more than 400 cancer clinical trials underway, and providers have expertise in eight clinical oncology subspecialties. U.S. News & World Report ranked UC Davis among the top 50 cancer programs in the nation for 2018-19.

University of Chicago Medical Center. With more than 200 cancer specialists, University of Chicago Medical Center is home to eight specialized clinics and programs, including the Comprehensive Cancer Risk and Prevention Center. The National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center focuses on research and enrolls over 1,000 patients in therapeutic trials each year. U.S. News & World Report ranked University of Chicago Medical Center the No. 33 hospital in the nation for cancer care in 2018-19.

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (Iowa City). University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is home to the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, which was founded in 1980. It is Iowa's only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center and has held that designation since 2000. Holden Cancer Center coordinates all cancer-related research, education and patient care by faculty from 41 departments and six colleges. U.S. News & World Report ranked University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics among the top 20 adult cancer hospitals for 2018-19.

University of Kansas Hospital (Kansas City). The National Cancer Institute designated the University of Kansas Cancer Center a comprehensive cancer center in 2012, and the hospital has retained the designation ever since. The University of Kansas Cancer Center has 350 cancer researchers and clinicians as well as 124 disease-specific oncologists. Physicians with the center's blood and marrow transplant program, which launched in 1977, have performed more than 3,100 transplants. In the last 10 years, the program has grown from completing 40 transplants each year to completing more than 300 annually.

University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital (Lexington). With 77 clinical providers, University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital is home to the Markey Cancer Center, which was established in 1983. In July 2013, Markey earned National Cancer Institute designation and is the only NCI-designated cancer center in Kentucky. U.S. News & World Report ranked Markey among the top 50 adult cancer hospitals in the nation for 2018-19.

University of Maryland Medical Center (Baltimore). The University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center was designated a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute in 2016. Serving over 3,600 new patients each year, the Greenebaum Cancer Center has about 230 ongoing clinical trials available for cancer patients. The Greenebaum Cancer Center is ranked among the top 50 cancer programs in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report.

University of Miami Health System. The University of Miami Health System is home to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, which treats a wide range of cancers across 15 site diseases. Sylvester was the first facility on the East Coast to have an MRI-guided radiation therapy system. Sylvester is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.

University of Minnesota Medical Center (Minneapolis). Founded in 1991, the Masonic Cancer Center is part of the university's Academic Health Center. It has held National Cancer Institute designation as a comprehensive cancer center since 1998 and has over 500 experts in multiple disciplines dedicated to cancer care. U.S. News & World Report ranked the University of Minnesota Medical Center among the top 50 hospitals for cancer care across the nation in 2018-19.

UNC Hospitals (Chapel Hill, N.C.). Established in 1975, UNC's Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center is a research and treatment hub at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with its clinical base at N.C. Cancer Hospital. With over 300 researchers from more than 40 departments across campus, it is the only public National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in North Carolina. The hospital and its affiliated clinics reported over 198,000 outpatient visits in fiscal year 2018. University of North Carolina Hospitals was one of the top 50 hospitals for cancer care in the country in 2018-19, according to U.S. News & World Report.

University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (Houston). University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, established in 1941, was one of the nation's original three comprehensive cancer centers designated by the National Cancer Act of 1971. In fiscal year 2017, MD Anderson's 19,530 employees, including 1,743 faculty members, cared for more than 130,000 patients and enrolled 10,831 patients in more than 1,250 clinical trials. The Texas-based cancer center was one of the top National Cancer Institute-funded organizations in 2018, receiving $61 million in grants. With its dedication, MD Anderson has remained one of the top cancer programs in the nation, earning the No. 1 or No. 2 ranking in cancer care from U.S. News & World Report for 28 consecutive years.

University of Utah Health (Salt Lake City). University of Utah Health is home to the 100-bed Huntsman Cancer Institute, founded by the Huntsman family in 1995. The institute has more than 142,000 patient visits annually and up to 200 clinical trials open for enrollment at any given time. 2017 marked an exciting year for research at the cancer institute, because it opened its new Primary Children and Families' Cancer Research Center. In addition, the institute's 170 research teams earned $38.3 million in National Cancer Institute funding in 2018 so far. CareChex ranked University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics No. 10 in the nation for cancer care excellence, and U.S. News & World Report ranked University of Utah Health among the top 50 hospitals in the country for cancer care in 2018-19.

University of Virginia Medical Center (Charlottesville). University of Virginia Medical Center's UVA Cancer Center touts its research program, which has 180 faculty members from 23 departments looking into how cancer arises, grows and spreads to inform treatment and prevention efforts. UVA Medical Center has received $20.4 million in research funding from the National Institutes of Cancer so far in 2018. UVA Cancer Center is a member of the Oncology Research and Information Exchange Network, a national research body dedicated to cancer diagnosis, treatment and prevention. The University of Virginia Medical Center is ranked among U.S. News & World Report's top 50 hospitals in the nation for cancer care in 2018-19.

UW Health (Madison, Wis.). UW Health is home to the UW Carbone Cancer Center, a comprehensive cancer center. On average, more than 30,000 patients are seen annually for cancer care across UW Health. The University of Wisconsin – Madison has received $27.3 million in funding from the National Cancer Institute in 2018 so far. UW Health has several accolades for cancer care, including ranking among U.S. News & World Report's top 50 hospitals in the country for cancer care in 2018-19.

UPMC (Pittsburgh). UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is one of the largest integrated community cancer networks in the nation, with more than 70 treatment centers. In 2017, the cancer center employed 1,446 staff members, including 224 medical oncology/hematology providers, 33 radiology oncology physicians and 27 surgical oncology specialists. Across its locations, more than 110,000 individuals seek cancer care annually, 37,000 of whom are new patients. UPMC Hillman Cancer Center was awarded $53 million in grants from the National Cancer Institute.

USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center-Keck Hospital of USC (Los Angeles). USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, located in the Keck Hospital of USC, was designated a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute in 1973, becoming one of the nation's first eight facilities to hold the designation. The cancer center is a leader in cancer research, with more than 200 faculty members dispersed among five thematic and five translational research programs that investigate the origins of cancer, new prevention strategies and the search for a cure. U.S. News & World Report ranked Keck Hospital of USC among the top 20 hospitals in the country for cancer care in 2018-19. In addition, CareChex ranked the hospital No. 1 in the nation for cancer care excellence.

UT Southwestern Medical Center (Dallas). UT Southwestern Medical Center is home to the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center, which was founded in 1989. A leader in cancer research, the center has more than 250 researchers dedicated to understanding cancer and searching for a cure. In 2018, the Simmons Cancer Center secured $22.5 million in funding from the National Cancer Institute, ranking it among the highest NCI-funded institutions in the nation. The cancer center currently has 40 ongoing investigator-initiated clinical trials.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (Nashville, Tenn.). Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, located in the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, was established in 1993. With $49.3 million in National Cancer Institute funding in 2018 so far, the Ingram Cancer Center ranks among the 50 organizations nationwide to receive the highest amount of cancer research grant support. In 2007, the Ingram Cancer Center was invited to join the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, a nonprofit alliance of 27 leading centers working together to improve cancer treatment for all patients. For 2018-19, U.S. News & World Report ranked Vanderbilt University Medical Center among the top 50 hospitals in the country for cancer care.

Via Christi Health (Wichita, Kan.). Via Christi Health's dedicated cancer facility inside Via Christi Hospital St. Francis, the Via Christi Cancer Institute, houses 40 private patient rooms, two radiation therapy rooms and an ambulatory infusion room. The department employs 38 specialists, including the region's only orthopedic oncologist and two radiation oncologists. The institute is also home to the Wichita NCI Community Oncology Research Program, which has enrolled more than 18,000 people in clinical trials since its launch 35 years ago. Via Christi Health is a member of St. Louis-based Ascension.

Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center (Winston-Salem, N.C.). The Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center Comprehensive Cancer Center has held the National Cancer Institute's comprehensive cancer center designation since 1990. The cancer center employs 120 cancer-specific clinicians, including 42 full-time faculty members with medical degrees or professional degrees as well as 25 physician assistants and nurse practitioners. Currently, the medical center has 80 cancer studies available. In 2018-19, U.S. News & World Report ranked Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center among the top 20 hospitals in the nation for cancer care.

WVU Cancer Institute (Morgantown, W.Va.). WVU Cancer Institute, formerly known as the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center, will double in size and physician talent in the coming years through a major expansion project. By 2020, the cancer institute will hire 38 new physicians across more than a dozen subspecialties, as well as 100 advanced practice providers, pharmacists, nurses and medical assistants. In 2017, the WVU Cancer Institute, a leader in cancer research, enrolled 9 percent of its 1,665 new patients in clinical trials, compared to the national average of 3 percent.

Yale-New Haven (Conn.) Hospital. Yale-New Haven Hospital's Yale Cancer Center, one of the country's inaugural comprehensive cancer centers, has now held the National Cancer Institute's comprehensive cancer center designation for more than 44 years. The center, a collaboration between the Yale School of Medicine and Smilow Cancer Hospital, has more than 300 cancer researchers on faculty. The cancer center received $45.1 million in National Cancer Institute funding in 2018 so far.
