Becker's Healthcare is pleased to name the "100 hospital and health system chief medical officers to know" in 2019.

 The list features physician leaders dedicated to strengthening their organizations through leadership development, patient safety initiatives, health IT and quality improvement. Many have served as department heads and continue to practice medicine, while others focus on process improvement and patient advocacy.

As proven leaders in their field, the physicians highlighted on this list have extensive experience building clinical and administrative teams. Several have held executive leadership positions at multiple hospitals and health systems, overseeing efforts to expand health IT, improve patient experience and build a positive culture for their organization.

James Adams, MD. Chief of Emergency Medicine and CMO of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare (Chicago). Dr. Adams joined Northwestern University in 2000 as a professor and chair of the department of medicine and added the responsibilities of CMO of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare in 2013. He previously served as vice chair of the department of emergency medicine at Boston-based Brigham and Women's Hospital and was on the faculty of Harvard Medical School, also in Boston.

Mohammed Shafeeq Ahmed, MD. Vice President of Medical Affairs and CMO of Howard County General Hospital (Columbia, Md.). Dr. Ahmed is in charge of medical safety and quality at Howard County General Hospital and integrates the services and care standards with those of Johns Hopkins Medicine. He previously served as COO and CMO of Baystate Health's Eastern Region, based in Springfield, Mass., and held the same positions at Baystate Mary Lane Hospital in Ware, Mass. Before joining Baystate, Dr. Ahmed was a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Naval Medical Corps.

Scott Anders, MD. CMO of Tenet Physician Resources (Dallas). Dr. Anders is responsible for supporting physician recruitment and retention, company and market growth, and clinical and quality strategies as CMO of Tenet Physician Resources. He also plays an integral role in technology integration for the organization. He has over 15 years of experience as a senior physician executive and previously served as division medical director of Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare.

Michael Anderson, MD. CMO of CHI Franciscan (Tacoma, Wash.). Dr. Anderson joined CHI Franciscan in 2013 as CMO and senior vice president of quality at Bremerton, Wash.-based Harrison Medical Center before becoming vice president of medical affairs and associate CMO of the Peninsula Region for CHI Franciscan. In 2016, he was appointed CMO of the organization. Dr. Anderson previously served in the U.S. Navy for more than 30 years, attaining the rank of rear admiral. He also has experience as commanding officer of the Naval Hospital Great Lakes in North Chicago and medical officer in the Marine Corps.

Jeffrey Arnold, MD. CMO of Santa Clara Valley Health and Hospital System (San Jose, Calif.). Since 2012, Dr. Arnold has served as CMO of Santa Clara Valley Health and Hospital System, the second-largest county-owned public health and hospital system in California. The system includes a 574-bed central hospital, 10 community health centers, a large behavioral health department, and a health plan with 200,000 delegated and assigned lives. Dr. Arnold has previously held leadership positions including medical director of the Yale New Haven (Conn.) Center for Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Response, interim CMO of Salinas, Calif.-based Natividad Medical Center, and chair and medical director of the emergency department at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.

Alejandro Arroliga, MD. CMO of Baylor Scott & White Health (Dallas). Dr. Arroliga is a pulmonary medicine specialist that serves as CMO of Baylor Scott & White Health. In his current role, Dr. Arroliga leads clinical initiatives for the health system's 48 hospitals and 800 patient care sites. Baylor Scott & White Health has more than 7,800 active physicians.

Sam Bagchi, MD. Senior Vice President, CMO and Chief Medical Information Officer of Christus Health (Irving, Texas). In his dual role, Dr. Bagchi oversees clinical operations, quality control and informatics while also establishing strong working relationships with Christus' 14,000 physician leaders. He previously served as the senior vice president and CMO of Dallas-based Methodist Health System and chief medical and quality officer of Presence Health in Chicago.

Thomas Balcezak, MD. CMO of Yale New Haven (Conn.) Hospital and Yale New Haven Health. Dr. Balcezak is CMO for both Yale New Haven Hospital and Yale New Haven Health, providing performance management and clinical oversight for physician leaders at the system's Bridgeport Hospital, Greenwich Hospital, Yale Medicine and Northeast Medical Group, as well as community physicians. He has spent nearly 20 years in progressively senior roles at the health system.

David L. Battinelli, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Northwell Health (Great Neck, N.Y.). On top of his duties as CMO at Northwell, Dr. Battinelli serves as the vice dean and Betsy Cushing Whitney Professor of Medicine at Hempstead, N.Y.-based Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Previously, the board-certified internist served as the health system's chief academic officer and senior vice president of academic affairs. He is a past president of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine. Dr. Batinelli also works closely with various committees for the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine, American Board of Internal Medicine and American College of Physicians, among other medical organizations.

Marjorie Bessel, MD. Chief Clinical Officer of Banner Health (Phoenix). As the chief clinical spokesperson and physician voice for the health system, Dr. Bessel is devoted to understanding the global view of healthcare trends. With help from the chief medical informatics officer and the CIO, Dr. Bessel leverages innovative technology to improve quality care. Under her leadership, Banner Health received a HIMSS Davies Award in 2018, and the health system was honored with CHIME's "Most Wired" award. Prior to joining Banner Health — where she was the system's first full-time dedicated hospitalist — Dr. Bessel served as a national medical director of a hospitalist group.

Sunny Bhatia, MD. CMO of Prime Healthcare Division I (Ontario, Calif.). Under Dr. Bhatia's guidance, the 17-hospital health system earned recognition each year from 2016 to 2018 as one of IBM Watson Health's "100 Top Hospitals." Quadruple board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, nuclear cardiology and interventional cardiology, Dr. Bhatia is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions. He has authored various publications for peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Bhatia is also involved in numerous charitable organizations, including the World Children's Initiative and the Uganda Heart Project, which provides cardiac care for children who have congenital heart disease.

Kent Bishop, MD. CMO of ProMedica Physicians and Acute Care President (Toledo, Ohio). Dr. Bishop collaborates with clinical and administrative leaders in his role as CMO of ProMedica Physicians and acute care president to ensure clinical excellence. During his tenure, Dr. Bishop has shifted the health system's model to gain real-time clinical insights for post-procedural outcomes and leveraged data on patient experience for economic and operational efficiencies. He also leads the team to create customized work models for primary care providers, which has helped the system achieve low physician turnover and recruit new physicians.

Jeremy Boal, MD. President of Mount Sinai Downtown and Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer of Mount Sinai Health System (New York City). As chief clinical officer and executive vice president, Dr. Boal is responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of the health system's more than $500 million investment to create Mount Sinai Downtown, of which Dr. Boal serves as president. Prior to his current roles, Dr. Boal served as executive vice president and CMO of Mount Sinai Health System. A board-certified internist, Dr. Boal started his career at the health system more than 20 years ago. Throughout his career, he has earned numerous awards, including the Humanism and Medicine Award as well as the Alexander Richman Commemorative Award in Humanism and Ethics in Medicine from the New York City-based Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

John Bonamo, MD. Executive Vice President, Chief Quality Officer and CMO of RWJBarnabas Health (West Orange, N.J.). RWJBarnabas Health appointed Dr. Banamo CMO on Jan. 1, 2015, when the hospital was known as Barnabas Health. Before joining the hospital, he served as CEO of Saint Barnabas Medical Center. After spending years in private practice, he went on to serve as senior vice president for medical affairs at SBMC. During his tenure as an attending physician, Dr. Bonamo served as the clinical chief of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at SBMC. Dr. Bonamo is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and belongs to the New Jersey Obstetrical and Gynecological Society.

William A. Bornstein, MD, PhD. Chief Quality Officer and CMO of Emory Healthcare (Atlanta). A professor of endocrinology, metabolism and lipids, Dr. Bornstein holds the distinction of master clinician at Atlanta-based Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Bornstein spearheaded Emory Healthcare's quality program expansion, forming the Emory Healthcare Office of Quality. He went on to merge the quality office with the Office of Risk and Insurance Services, creating the Emory Healthcare Office of Quality and Risk. A board-certified internist and endocrinologist, Dr. Bornstein served on the Clinical Evaluative Sciences Council Steering Committee as well as the Risk Adjustment Task Force of the University HealthSystem Consortium. Currently, Dr. Bornstein chairs the Vizient University HealthSystem Consortium Medical Leadership Network Steering Committee and co-chairs the Anthem National Advisory Panel on Value-Based Solutions.

Bernard Boulanger, MD. Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer of MetroHealth System (Cleveland). MetroHealth System appointed Dr. Boulanger chief clinical officer and executive vice president in March 2016. Prior to this role, Dr. Boulanger held multiple roles at Lexington-based University of Kentucky HealthCare, leaving the system as CMO. While at UK HealthCare, Dr. Boulanger served as a trauma and general surgeon, medical director for inpatient services, association chief medical officer for perioperative services, and physician executive for the UK Good Samaritan Hospital. Dr. Boulanger also served as enterprise director for surgery, endoscopy and interventional services during his time at UK HealthCare.

Judie Charlton, MD. CMO of WVU Medicine (Morgantown, W.Va.). Dr. Charlton was appointed CMO at WVU Medicine as well as vice dean for clinical affairs at Morgantown-based WVU School of Medicine in September 2011. An ophthalmologist, Dr. Charlton joined WVU Medicine in 1989, serving in the WVU Eye Institute, which treats more than 32,000 patients annually, before becoming chair in 2008. Dr. Charlton served on the governing boards of the West Virginia United Health System and United Physicians Care, which focuses on placing primary care physicians in rural areas. Currently, she serves as a board examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology. She previously served on the Residency Review Committee for Ophthalmology of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Catherine Chang, MD. CMO of Greenville (S.C.) Health System. In addition to serving as CMO of Greenville Health System, Dr. Chang is a professor at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville, where her research focuses on interstitial lung disease thoracic radiology. She joined Greenville Health System more than 13 years ago as a staff physician. She went on to serve as the CMO of Greenville Memorial Campus before being named CMO of Greenville Health System in October 2016. She is affiliated with multiple area hospitals and is a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians.

Phillip Chang, MD. CMO of UK HealthCare (Lexington, Ky.). During his time at UK HealthCare, Dr. Chang has focused on combating the opioid crisis. After Dr. Chang conducted a study on new protocol at the health system, UK HealthCare providers sent patients home with 50 percent less opioids. Along with serving as CMO, Dr. Chang is on the Ambulatory Oversight Committee, Executive Finance Committee and Executive Management Committee at UK HealthCare. Dr. Chang joined UK HealthCare's surgical faculty in 2005; between 2013 and 2016 he served as an operating room medical director at the health system.

Robert Cherry, MD. Chief Medical and Quality Officer of UCLA Health (Los Angeles). UCLA Health appointed Dr. Cherry chief medical and quality officer in January 2014. Before joining UCLA, Dr. Cherry was the director of clinical and operational excellence at Navigant Consulting. Dr. Cherry spent time serving as CMO and vice president for clinical effectiveness at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Ill., where he was responsible for developing and implementing systems that foster safe care delivery methods. The American College of Surgeons regularly consults with Dr. Cherry due to his extensive surgical background.

Joe Corcoran, DO. CMO of HCA Healthcare Far West Division (Las Vegas). Dr. Corcoran had been with HCA Healthcare for nearly six years when he was appointed CMO of the company's Far West Division in 2018. He joined the system as CMO of Brandon (Fla.) Regional Hospital in 2013. During Dr. Corcoran's time at Brandon Regional Hospital, the hospital launched six residency programs and expanded advanced clinical services. In his current role, Dr. Corcoran oversees clinical care at nine hospitals, nine surgical centers and many other outpatient sites in California and Nevada.

Glen Couchman, MD. CMO of Baylor Scott & White Health Central Texas Division (Dallas). Board-certified in family medicine, Dr. Couchman joined Baylor Scott & White Health Central Texas Division more than 30 years ago. He was named CMO in September 2011 after holding the position of associate CMO. In addition to his current role, Dr. Couchman is an associate professor at Texas A&M College of Medicine in Bryan.

Patrick Courneya, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals (Oakland, Calif.). Dr. Courneya served as associate medical director and medical director of Bloomington, Minn.-based HealthPartners Health Plan for nearly 10 years before joining Kaiser. Dr. Courneya, who was a family practice physician for 25 years, is a member of the California board of directors for the National Alliance on Mental Illness. He's also the former chair of America's Health Insurance Plans' Chief Medical Officer Leadership Council.

David Crabb, MD. CMO of Eskenazi Health (Indianapolis). Dr. Crabb has been continuously associated with Eskenazi Health since the late 1970s. He was named CMO of the health system in 2017. Dr. Crabb most recently served as Eskenazi Health's chief of medicine and chairman of the board for Eskenazi Medical Group, positions he took on in 2014 and 2016, respectively. Dr. Crabb was chair for research in the IU School of Medicine's Department of Medicine from 2000 to 2015, and he received the Distinguished Teaching Award from the department in 2016.

Ravin Davidoff, MBBCh. Senior Vice President and CMO of Boston Medical Center. Dr. Davidoff was promoted to senior vice president and CMO of Boston Medical Center, the primary teaching affiliate of Boston University School of Medicine, after serving as vice president of medical affairs and CMO from 2008-11. Dr. Davidoff oversees all elements of clinical care at Boston Medical Center, including credentialing, peer review and physician licensure. He also manages the hospital's Medical Executive Committee, which involves overseeing graduate medical education programs and the hospital's research program, among other duties.

Isabelle Desjardins, MD. CMO of The University of Vermont Medical Center (Burlington). Dr. Desjardins was named CMO of The University of Vermont Medical Center in October 2017 after holding several clinical leadership roles at the hospital, including medical director of inpatient psychiatry. As CMO, Dr. Desjardins works closely with the hospital's chief nursing officer and oversees the integration and coordination of clinical care and patient safety. Dr. Desjardins is a part-time attending physician in The University of Vermont Health Network Medical Group and an associate professor of psychiatry at UVM's Larner College of Medicine.

Octavio Diaz, MD. CMO of Tenet Healthcare (Dallas). Dr. Diaz joined Tenet Healthcare in 2004 and has nearly two decades of healthcare leadership experience. He was promoted to CMO of Tenet Healthcare in December 2016 after serving as CMO for Tenet's Florida and Northeast regions. In his current role, Dr. Diaz, who is board-certified in emergency medicine, oversees quality of care and patient safety initiatives across Tenet's network, including its 65 acute care and specialty hospitals.

William Ellert, MD. CMO of Abrazo Health and Arizona Care Network (Phoenix). Dr. Ellert was named CMO of Abrazo Health, a five-hospital system, in 2014. He also serves as CMO for Arizona Care Network, a clinically integrated network of more than 2,000 physician partners. Dr. Ellert previously served as CMO of Dignity Health Medical Group from 2011-13 and as the CMO of Phoenix Baptist Hospital, now named Abrazo Central Campus, from 2009-11. Prior to that, he served as a hospitalist in the Abrazo system for roughly six years. Dr. Ellert has received multiple awards throughout his career, including the National Family Physician of the Year award from the American Academy of Family Physicians in 2009.

Sunil "Sunny" Eappen, MD. Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs and CMO of Brigham and Women's Hospital (Boston). Dr. Eappen joined Brigham and Women's Hospital in July 2018. Prior to Brigham and Women's, Dr. Eappen had a nearly nine-year career at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston, where he served as chief of anesthesiology and CMO. Dr. Eappen is an associate professor of anesthesia at Harvard Medical School.

Eric Fish, MD. Vice President of Medical Affairs and CMO of Schneck Medical Center (Seymour, Ind.). Dr. Fish joined Schneck Medical Center in 2005 and was named vice president of medical affairs and CMO in 2017. He founded Schneck Obstetrics & Gynecology in 2006 and is a past president of the Schneck medical staff. Dr. Fish is chairman of the board of Inspire Health Partners, a Columbus, Ind.-based clinically integrated network.

Loring Flint, MD. Chief Physician Executive and High Reliability Officer of Inova Health System (Falls Church, Va.). Dr. Flint has many responsibilities in his current role, including overseeing patient experience and clinical quality and safety. With more than 30 years of healthcare experience, Dr. Flint is a major contributor to Inova's strategic direction. Before joining Inova, Dr. Flint spent 20 years with Springfield, Mass.-based Baystate Health, serving as CMO of Baystate Health and president of Baystate Medical Practices. Dr. Flint also held leadership positions in emergency medical services and ambulatory and physician services during a 10-year career at the now-shuttered Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago.

Fritz François, MD. CMO and Patient Safety Officer of NYU Langone Health (New York City). As CMO of NYU Langone Health, Dr. François helped lead efforts to open the NYU Langone Kimmel Pavilion and Hassenfeld Children's Hospital, both in New York City, in 2018. Well-known for his organizational leadership, Dr. François received the NYU Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award in 2011 for spearheading a multidisciplinary team of clinicians who traveled to Haiti to provide care to victims of the 2010 earthquake. Dr. François has also published more than 70 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and presentations as an academic gastroenterologist, receiving five American Society for GI Endoscopy Diversity Minority Research awards in his career.

Harris Frankel, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Nebraska Medicine (Omaha). After spending two decades in private practice, Dr. Frankel joined the neurological sciences department at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 2011 and became CMO in 2014. He also serves as medical director of the UNMC-Physicians Clinical Neurosciences Center since 2011. As a board-certified physician in neurology, Dr. Frankel is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Academy of Neurology, the American Medical Association, and the Nebraska Academy of Neurology and Neurosurgery.

Michael Glenn, MD. CMO of Virginia Mason Medical Center (Seattle). Dr. Glenn served as physician-in-chief and medical director of clinics at Virginia Mason Health System before stepping into the CMO role in 2013. He is also the vice chair of the governing council of the American Medical Association's Integrated Physician Practice Section. Dr. Glenn first joined Virginia Mason as an otolaryngology clinician in 1995 and still practices as a head and neck cancer reconstructive surgeon alongside his administrative duties.

Jonathan E. Gottlieb, MD. Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Executive of IU Health (Indianapolis). Dr. Gottlieb joined IU Health as executive vice president and chief medical executive in 2014, previously holding the CMO position at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore and Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. He works in partnership with IU School of Medicine to promote the quality and effectiveness of IU Health's clinical, educational and research activities. Dr. Gottlieb, who completed his residency at Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston and a fellowship at Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Hospital, is board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine.

Loran D. Hauck, MD. CMO of AdventHealth (Altamonte Springs, Fla.). As CMO of AdventHealth — recently rebranded from Adventist Health System — Dr. Hauck oversees strategic direction of the 47-hospital system's clinical initiatives, councils and committees. He previously served as president and CEO of Sunbelt Medical Management, which is AdventHealth's managed care management services organization, and as medical director of Loma Linda (Calif.) Faculty Medical Group. He is also a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American College of Physicians and the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians.

Michael Henderson, MD. CMO of University of Mississippi Medical Center (Jackson). Dr. Henderson joined University of Mississippi Medical Center as CMO in 2015 after serving as chief quality officer of Cleveland Clinic for five years. During his time at Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Henderson established and chaired the system's Quality and Patient Safety Institute, which created a coordinated focus on care quality for the whole health system. He is also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and served as chair of its advisory committee on national surgical quality improvement.

Russell Holman, MD. CMO of LifePoint Health (Brentwood, Tenn.). Dr. Holman, who joined LifePoint in February 2013, oversees the 60,000-employee company's quality, safety, clinical effectiveness and patient experience initiatives. He created LifePoint's National Quality Program with Duke University Health System in Durham, N.C., which helped drive a 60 percent decrease in aggregate hospital-associated harms. Under Dr. Holman's leadership, LifePoint became the first investor-owned hospital company to receive the John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Award in 2018.

Tallulah Holmstrom, MD. CMO of KershawHealth (Camden, S.C.). Before stepping into her CMO role at KershawHealth in 2016, Dr. Holmstrom held numerous leadership positions at the organization, including chief of medical staff and department of medicine chair. One of her first major initiatives was bringing tele-ICU to KershawHealth in June 2016, which allows nurses to call tele-ICU doctors who can then remotely prescribe medications or otherwise direct care. This helped the system avoid 2,900 hospital days and save $1.9 million the year it was implemented. As a practicing physician in Camden, Dr. Holmstrom is board-certified in internal medicine and hospice and palliative medicine.

Syed Ahmed Hussain, MD. Senior Vice President and Regional CMO of Trinity Health of New England (Hartford, Conn.). Dr. Hussain joined Trinity Health of New England as senior vice president and regional CMO in August 2018, previously serving as CMO of Detroit Medical Center's Sinai-Grace and Huron Valley-Sinai hospitals. In his current role, Dr. Hussain is focused on the clinical integration and regionalization of key service lines across Trinity Health's five hospitals and affiliated medical centers in the Livonia, Mich., region. In 2017, Crain's Detroit Business recognized Dr. Hussain as a "40 Under 40" leader for his quality improvement work at DMC.

Michael Jablonover, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of the University of Maryland Medical Center (Baltimore). Before joining UMMC in 2015, Dr. Jablonover held numerous leadership positions at the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute, including CEO, CMO and vice president of medical affairs. As senior vice president and CMO of UMMC, Dr. Jablonover's responsibilities include overseeing the medical center's medical and pharmacy services, health information management, and graduate medical education. He is a board-certified internal medicine physician and a fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Amir Jaffer, MD. Chief Quality Officer and CMO of NewYork-Presbyterian Queens (New York City). Dr. Jaffer joined NewYork-Presbyterian Queens in January 2017, where he oversees clinical program development, physician satisfaction, and patient and employee safety. Before joining NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, Dr. Jaffer served as associate CMO and vice chair of quality and safety at Chicago-based Rush University Medical Center. At Rush, he contributed to efforts that resulted in Rush maintaining its high ranking in Vizient's annual quality and accountability study.

Ghassan Jamaleddine, MD. CMO of Alameda Health System (Oakland, Calif.). In his role as CMO of four-hospital Alameda Health System, Dr. Jamaleddine oversees medical operations spanning coordination of care, clinical information system development, patient safety and physician engagement. He is also responsible for the development of Alameda Health Partners, AHS' physician organization, which employs roughly 175 physicians. Before joining AHS, Dr. Jamaleddine was the CMO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County Hospital.

Kevin Joseph, MD. Senior Vice President of Quality and CMO of TriHealth (Cincinnati). Dr. Joseph joined TriHealth in 2017 as system chief quality officer, and since then he has been promoted to senior vice president of quality and CMO. In his current role, he is responsible for quality and safety improvement across TriHealth's six hospitals and 140 practice locations. Dr. Joseph is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the American College of Physician Executives.

Lily Jung Henson, MD. CMO of Piedmont Henry Hospital (Stockbridge, Ga.). Dr. Henson assumed her current role after serving as Piedmont Healthcare's chief of neurology. Before joining Piedmont Healthcare, Dr. Henson was vice president of medical affairs at Seattle-based Swedish Ballard Hospital. She also served as the first chief of staff at Swedish Issaquah (Wash.) Hospital. Dr. Henson is a former American College of Healthcare Executives Dolan Executive Diversity Program scholar.

Ronald Kaufman, MD. CMO of Good Samaritan Hospital (San Jose, Calif.). Dr. Kaufman has over 40 years of experience in medical and administrative leadership. In his current role as CMO of Good Samaritan Hospital, Dr. Kaufman oversees regulatory compliance, patient safety, care quality, and the development and implementation of clinical programs. Before joining Good Samaritan, Dr. Kaufman served as the CMO of Tenet Healthcare's western region, where he oversaw quality initiatives and clinical operations across 22 hospitals in California and Tucson, Ariz.

Despina G. Kayichian, MD. Vice President of Medical Affairs and Quality at Glendale (Calif.) Adventist Medical Center. Dr. Kayichian has served as Glendale Adventist Medical Center's vice president of medical affairs and quality since May 2016. Her goals include sharing Glendale Adventist Medical Center's commitment to safety and quality with the community beyond the hospital. Before joining Glendale Adventist Medical Center, Dr. Kayichian was CMO of the Los Angeles-based Venice Family Clinic, a Federally Qualified Health Center.

Michael D. Kelleher, MD. CMO of Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. In his role as Lurie Children's CMO, Dr. Kelleher oversees the quality, patient safety and family experience plan. He joined Lurie Children's in 2003 as an attending physician in the hospital's pediatric intensive care unit and most recently served as interim division head for critical care. In addition to his role at Lurie Children's, Dr. Kelleher is the Crown Family Professor and an associate professor of critical care pediatrics at the Chicago-based Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

Bryan Kelly, MD. Surgeon-in-Chief and Medical Director of Hospital for Special Surgery (New York City). Dr. Kelly served as the chief of sports medicine and co-director of the Center for Hip Preservation at Hospital for Special Surgery before transitioning into the CMO role in June. He is also heading up the hospital's newly created Office of Medical Leadership. He has experience caring for professional athletes and serving as the head team physician for the New York Rangers.

Munish Khaneja, MD. CMO and Lead of Clinical Innovation at Altruista Health (Reston, Va.). In his role, Dr. Khaneja is responsible for clinical strategy and regulatory innovation across Altruista Health's products and services. His leadership has supported Altruista Health in driving cost savings and improving outcomes. Before joining Altruista Health, Dr. Khaneja was a managed care executive at Affinity Health Plan and EmblemHealth, both based in New York City.

Jean Kutner, MD. CMO of UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital and Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs (Aurora). Dr. Kutner is responsible for patient safety, quality and clinical effectiveness. She works closely with nursing staff, as well as with leaders in the hospital and affiliated school of medicine. Before assuming her current role, Dr. Kutner was head of the general internal medicine division at UCHealth University of Colorado School of Medicine.

James E. LaBelle, MD. Corporate Senior Vice President and CMO of Scripps (San Diego). Dr. LaBalle became CMO and corporate senior vice president of Scripps in 2013 and has since been instrumental in linking Scripps hospitals to a burgeoning ambulatory care network through physician engagement and coordination. In his role, Dr. LaBelle is focused on improving patient care and reducing costs at the five-hospital health system. He also manages medical directorships and intensivist and hospitalist programs.

Michael Langberg, MD. Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs and CMO of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles). Dr. Langberg focuses on bioethics, healthcare-acquired infection prevention, physician credentialing and resource management. He has testified before the California Senate on physician performance, as well as before the U.S. Congress on patient safety and quality. Dr. Langberg is a permanent member of the California Department of Public Health's Healthcare-Associated Infection Advisory Committee and serves on the board of directors of the Hospital Quality Institute

Omar Lateef, DO. CEO and CMO of Rush University Medical Center, CMO of Rush University System for Health (Chicago). Dr. Lateef, a pulmonary and critical care physician, became vice president of clinical affairs and CMO of Rush University Medical Center in 2015. He took on the CEO role of Rush University Medical Center in 2019, and maintained his role as CMO. In addition, he has served as a professor in the internal medicine department at Rush Medical College and vice chairperson of the internal medicine department at Rush University, both based in Chicago. He is actively involved in research, and his work has been published in numerous publications, including Critical Care Medicine and Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.

Timothy Lineberry, MD. System Vice President, Medical Staff at Advocate Aurora Health and CMO of Aurora Health Care Medical Group (Green Bay, Wis.). Dr. Lineberry leads 1,900-plus employed physicians and 1,000-plus advanced practice clinicians as CMO of Aurora Health Care Medical Group. He is also a clinical adjunct professor of psychiatry at Madison-based University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and serves as the Alliance of Independent Academic Medical Centers' adviser for its national initiative on clinician well-being. Dr. Lineberry joined Aurora in 2014, prior to which he worked at Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic, where he helped lead psychiatry services. He is the former secretary and board chair of the American Association of Suicidology.

Stephen Lockhart, MD, PhD. CMO of Sutter Health (Sacramento, Calif.). A board-certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Lockhart oversees quality, patient safety, research and education for the 24-hospital system in Northern California. As CMO of Sutter Health, he spearheaded the formation of a regional credentialing verification office. He then used that model to create a systemwide shared services credentialing function. He also serves as secretary of the ECRI Institute, an independent authority on healthcare practices and products.

Dennis Lund, MD. CMO of Stanford Children's Health and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford (Palo Alto, Calif.). As CMO of Stanford Children's Health and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford, Dr. Lund has helped oversee development of the organization's general surgery program, grown its telehealth services and helped merge physician leadership for its joint venture with Walnut Creek, Calif.-based John Muir Health. He is a fellow within the American Academy of Pediatrics' surgical section and a former member of the American College of Surgeons' Pediatric Surgery Advisory Council. Since March 2018, he has served as interim CEO of Stanford Children's Health and Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford, in addition to fulfilling his CMO duties.

John Lynch, MD. Vice President and CMO of Barnes-Jewish Hospital (St. Louis). Dr. Lynch became vice president and CMO of Barnes-Jewish Hospital in 2009. He leads the hospital's physicians and 1,800-member medical staff. A fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, Dr. Lynch has served on staff at the hospital since 1995. He is also a faculty member of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Thomas Miller, MD. CMO of University of Utah Health (Salt Lake City). Dr. Miller assumed the CMO role at University of Utah Health in 2006, overseeing clinical quality and patient care at the health system's four hospitals and 12 community health centers. During his tenure, he created chief value officer roles and councils, and he established the practice of posting physician experience ratings and comments online. He currently serves as a member of the Association of American Medical Colleges' Chief Medical Officer Group. Before becoming CMO of the health system, Dr. Miller was executive medical director of ambulatory clinics.

Corbi Milligan, MD. CMO of Methodist North Hospital and Methodist South Hospital (Memphis, Tenn.). Dr. Milligan became vice president and CMO of Methodist South Hospital in November 2015, and she assumed the vice president and CMO role at Methodist North Hospital in November 2017. She is the only CMO and first African-American woman to hold this dual role within Memphis, Tenn.-based Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare. A pediatrician with experience in private practice and the hospital setting, she is president-elect of the Bluff City Medical Society, a group of physicians working to lower healthcare disparities among minorities.

David Moorhead, MD. Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer of AdventHealth Clinical (Altamonte Springs, Fla.). As executive vice president and chief clinical officer for AdventHealth Clinical, Dr. Moorhead oversees clinical effectiveness and patient care for the health system. He previously was senior vice president and CMO of AdventHealth's Central Florida Division-South Region, based in Orlando. He also formerly served as CEO for Loma Linda (Calif.) University Medical Center.

William Neff, MD. CMO of UCHealth (Aurora, Colo.). Dr. Neff oversees care quality, patient safety and clinical standardization at UCHealth's 10 hospitals and more than 150 clinics in his role as CMO. He was interim president and CEO of the health system while it searched for a permanent leader. He has prior experience as CMO of Fort Collins, Colo.-based Poudre Valley Health System, now part of UCHealth, and as a founding partner of Northern Colorado Anesthesia Professional Consultants, which he helped grow into a practice of 70-plus providers.

Mark Olszyk, MD. Vice President of Medical Affairs and CMO of Carroll Health Center, a LifeBridge Health Hospital (Westminster, Md.). Dr. Olszyk has served as CMO of Carroll Health Center, a LifeBridge Health Hospital, since 2013. He is also vice president of Carroll Health Group and serves on the board of managers for the LifeBridge ACO. He was a Medical Corps lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy and senior medical officer in quality, safety and value at the Veterans Health Administration. He is a governor-appointed member of the Maryland Board of Physicians.

Cassandra Howard, MD. CMO of Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown (Tenn.) Hospital. Dr. Howard is CMO of the 319-bed, full-service Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital, overseeing clinical quality and patient safety. She previously was medical director of the emergency department at Methodist Germantown. She served for 29 years in the U.S. Air Force in the Air National Guard and is the state air surgeon assigned to the Nashville, Tenn.-based Joint Force Headquarters.

Kevin McCune, MD. CMO of Advocate Medical Group (Downers Grove, Ill.). In addition to serving as CMO of Advocate Medical Group, part of Advocate Aurora Health, Dr. McCune serves as medical director of Advocate Aurora Post Acute Network. His responsibilities include supporting 2,000 physicians and clinicians and driving provider engagement and good clinical outcomes. He recently chaired the American Medical Group Association Foundation's board of directors.

Brian Parker, MD. Chief Medical and Quality Officer of Allegheny Health Network (Pittsburgh). Dr. Parker is the top medical leader at Allegheny Health Network, an eight-hospital system with hundreds of outpatient locations and more than 2,400 physicians on staff. In his role as chief medical and quality officer, Dr. Parker oversees patient care quality, safety and service. He joined Allegheny Health Network in 2017 after practicing for nearly 20 years at Cleveland Clinic as an anesthesiologist.

Paryus Patel, MD. CMO of Prime Healthcare Division II (Ontario, Calif.). Dr. Patel serves as CMO of Prime Healthcare's Division II, which includes 28 hospitals and multiple medical groups spanning 12 states east of Nevada. He is triple board-certified and has 25 years of experience in critical care medicine, internal medicine and pulmonology. Dr. Patel concurrently serves as CMO of Centinela Hospital Medical Center, a Prime hospital based in Inglewood, Calif., where he also serves on the board and as director of its cardiovascular intensive care unit, critical care unit and medical intensive care unit, among other leadership positions.

Maria D. Padin, MD. CMO of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (Lebanon, N.H.). Dr. Padin, a board-certified OB-GYN, was named CMO of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in November 2015. As the top physician leader, Dr. Padin works closely with the CNO and chief quality officer to keep staff bylaws up to date, apply policies to physicians, manage accreditation processes and coordinate cross-disciplinary functions. Dr. Padin stepped into this leadership role after serving as medical director of the obstetrics and gynecology department at Dartmouth-Hitchcock's Concord (N.H.) Hospital. In 2017, she was one of 18 women in the U.S. to win a Carol Emmott fellowship for demonstrating leadership in healthcare. Through the fellowship, female healthcare leaders complete a 14-month program designed to expand their reach as leaders and accelerate their careers.

Jonathan B. Perlin, MD, PhD. President of Clinical Services and CMO of Hospital Corporation of America (Nashville, Tenn.). Dr. Perlin leads clinical services at 185 hospitals and more than 1,000 outpatient sites. His top areas of focus include improving EHRs, creating value with big data and analytics and improving clinical performance and patient safety. He joined HCA in 2006, coming from the public sector, where he served as undersecretary for health in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Dr. Perlin is a past chairman of the American Hospital Association and chairman of the secretary of Veterans Affairs Special Medical Advisory Group.

Robert Phillips, MD, PhD. Executive Vice President, Chief Physician Executive and Specialty Physician Group CEO of Houston Methodist. Dr. Phillips joined Houston Methodist in 2013 as CMO and president and CEO of the Specialty Physician Group of Houston Methodist. In late 2018, he was promoted to executive vice president and chief physician executive. As a board-certified cardiologist with expertise in hypertension and cardiovascular disease, Dr. Phillips has led more than 60 clinical trials for cardiovascular disease and authored more than 170 peer-reviewed and invited publications. He also serves as a professor of medicine at New York City-based Weill Cornell College of Medicine. He is part of several healthcare associations and served as the founding president of the American Population Health Society.

Irving Prengler, MD. CMO of Baylor Scott & White Health-North Texas (Dallas). Dr. Prengler, an internal medicine physician, serves as CMO of Baylor Scott & White Health's North Texas division, a position he has held for nearly six years. However, Dr. Prengler has spent a lifetime with Baylor. He was born at Baylor Hospital and trained at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, before becoming an attending physician at the medical center and building his own private practice. In 1999, he was named medical director of the Center for Quality and Care Coordination for Baylor Health Care System, which later merged with Scott & White Health System in 2013. Dr. Prengler became vice president of medical staff affairs and CMO of the medical center in 2005. He is also known for his contributions to building a hospitalist program at the medical center.

Marlon Priest, MD. Executive Vice President, Senior Services Market Leader and CMO of Bon Secours Health System (Marriottsville, Md.). In his current role, Dr. Priest focuses on clinical transformation and patient experience. He joined Bon Secours Health System in 2006 from University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he held a number of titles: professor of emergency medicine and surgery, senior associate chief of staff and chief quality officer of the university hospital, and medical director for the department of critical care transport. Dr. Priest is board-certified in internal medicine and emergency medicine.

David B. Pryor, MD. Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer of Ascension (St. Louis). As executive vice president and chief clinical officer of Ascension, Dr. Pryor is the top clinical leader across the health system, supporting more than 40,000 aligned clinicians. In his role, Dr. Pryor focuses on clinical integration via EHRs and providing administrative support for physicians, helping them focus on improving care. He also leads Ascension's clinical research arm. Dr. Pryor previously served as CMO of Ascension Health, and before that as senior vice president and CIO of Allina Health System in Minneapolis.

James Raczek, MD. CMO of UPMC Pinnacle (Harrisburg, Pa.). Dr. Raczek joined UPMC Pinnacle in 2017 after serving more than 20 years in various roles at the 411-bed Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, including senior vice president and CMO. Since joining UPMC Pinnacle, Dr. Raczek's focus has been leading quality and safety programs, medical education and medical staff relationships in a system of seven hospitals and more than 2,900 physicians. Shortly before he became CMO, the system had completed several acquisitions, making systemwide standardization and integration a key focus of his job. Dr. Raczek is a board-certified family medicine physician.

Roger A. Ray, MD. Executive Vice President and Chief Physician Executive of Atrium Health (Charlotte, N.C.). Dr. Ray joined Atrium Health, previously known as Carolinas HealthCare System, in 2007. In his role as executive vice president and chief physician executive of the 40-hospital system, Dr. Ray primarily focuses on quality and safety, in addition to accreditation, clinical care management, health information management, medical staff services and infection prevention. Prior to joining Atrium Health, Dr. Ray was CMO of the four-hospital AnMed Health system in Anderson, S.C. He is a board-certified clinical neurologist and certified in the subspecialty of electrodiagnostic medicine.

B. Stephens Richards, MD. CMO of Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (Dallas). Dr. Richards became Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children's first CMO in 2012. He is also the director of the hospital's Center for Excellence in Foot and a professor at UT Southwestern Medical Center. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Richards has served a term as the president of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America and Scoliosis Research Society.

Norman Rizk, MD. CMO of Stanford (Calif.) Health Care. Dr. Rizk has been CMO of Stanford Health Care since 2011. He has also served as senior associate dean for clinical affairs at Stanford University School of Medicine since 2001 and medical director of the intensive care unit at Stanford University Medical Center since 1997. As Stanford's top clinical leader, he oversees the academic medical center's quality and safety improvement efforts, as well as preventing care complications and infections. Dr. Rizk is board-certified in pulmonary disease, critical care medicine and internal medicine.

Daniel Roth, MD. Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer of Trinity Health (Livonia, Mich.). Dr. Roth joined Trinity Health in 2015 as CMO and COO of Trinity Health Partners, a population health joint venture between the health system and Marina del Rey, Calif.-based Heritage Provider Network. Today he is responsible for leading the 94-hospital system's clinical operations. Before joining Trinity Health, Dr. Roth served as CMO of Mercy Health in Cincinnati. He is a member of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Physician Executives.

Julian Schink, MD. CMO of Cancer Treatment Centers of America (Boca Raton, Fla.). Dr. Schink joined Cancer Treatment Centers of America in May 2017 as chief of gynecologic oncology and was promoted to CMO in January 2019. Before his work at the treatment centers, Dr. Schink served as vice chair of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison and held an endowed professorship at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. He has held leadership positions with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Society of Gynecologic Oncology.

Jan Schwarz-Miller, MD. Senior Vice President and Chief Medical and Academic Officer of Atlantic Health System (Morristown, N.J.). Dr. Schwarz-Miller has spent more than two decades at Atlantic Health System, where she has supervised departments and led care initiatives as vice president of quality. She was promoted to her current roles more than five years ago. She oversees systemwide projects at Atlantic Health System, including supporting it as one of the founding members of a regional clinical research consortium.

Michael Shabot, MD. CMO of Memorial Hermann Health System (Houston). Dr. Shabot manages a staff of roughly 5,500 affiliated physicians in his role as CMO of Memorial Hermann. Before taking on the CMO role, he served as the health system's chief quality officer, as well as chief of staff at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Outside of his hospital leadership roles, Dr. Shabot is an adjunct professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston's school of health information sciences and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Critical Care Medicine.

Steven Shapiro, MD. Executive Vice President and Chief Medical and Scientific Officer of UPMC (Pittsburgh). Dr. Shapiro promotes evidence-based care pathways and population health models across the 40-hospital UPMC system in his roles as CMO and CSO. Before taking on those leadership titles in 2010, Dr. Shapiro was the health system's Jack D. Myers professor and chair of the department of medicine. He has also served on the advisory committee of the NIH's National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and as a member of the FDA's Pulmonary-Allergy Drugs Advisory Committee.

Adhi Sharma, MD. Executive Vice President for Clinical and Professional Affairs and CMO of South Nassau Communities Hospital (Oceanside, N.Y.). Dr. Sharma is responsible for the 455-bed hospital's office of medical affairs, where he is a liaison between the organization's administrative and medical staff. Before joining South Nassau Communities Hospital, Dr. Sharma led medical staff at various healthcare facilities in the state. He served as vice president and COO at Uniondale, N.Y.-based Progressive Emergency Physicians, as well as chair of the emergency medicine departments at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, N.Y., and Victory Memorial Hospital in New York City.

Gulshan Sharma, MD. Vice President, CMO and Clinical Innovation Officer of University of Texas Medical Branch (Galveston). Dr. Sharma oversees clinical operations for the medical branch's 11,000-plus staff members. He also serves as the system's director of the division of pulmonary critical care and sleep medicine, as well as its Sealy and Smith Distinguished Chair in internal medicine. Along with his clinical leadership background, Dr. Sharma holds a master's of public health from New Haven, Conn.-based Yale University School of Medicine.

Timothy Sielaff, MD, PhD. CMO of Allina Health (Minneapolis). Dr. Sielaff joined Allina Health in 2005 as the medical director of the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. He now serves as the health system's CMO and senior vice president for the Allina Health Group and is responsible for advancing the system's quality agenda and leading the 11 clinical service lines. Dr. Sielaff has experience serving on the American College of Surgeons Board of Governors.

Robyn Strosaker, MD. Vice President and CMO of UH Case Medical Center. In 2016, Dr. Strosaker was appointed vice president and CMO of UH Cleveland Medical Center, a hospital she joined more than a decade ago. Alongside her leadership role at the medical center, she is an associate professor of pediatrics at Cleveland-based Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She serves as medical director of inpatient services at UH Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Gary Stuck, DO. CMO of Advocate Aurora Health (Downers Grove, Ill., and Milwaukee). Dr. Stuck oversees safety, health outcomes, clinical integration and population health at Aurora Advocate Health and provides executive leadership for Advocate Physician Partners and the health system's clinically integrated network. He was previously president of Lawn Medical Center, a nine-physician primary care group in Oak Lawn, Ill. Equipped with family medicine training, he is a founding member of the Advocate Physician Partners' board of directors and served as its chair for 13 years.

Andrew Ta, MD. CMO of Broward Health (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). Dr. Ta is responsible for medical affairs at 1,579-bed Broward Health, including oversight of the system's 1,600-plus medical staff. He boasts more than a decade of clinical leadership experience, including serving as CMO of Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at Miami-based Florida International University and as a physician clinical reviewer for NIA Magellan Health. Before joining Broward Health, he worked as an attending physician clinical reviewer at Miami-based West Kendall Baptist Hospital's emergency department.

Shawn Tittle, MD. CMO of Houston Methodist Baytown Hospital. Dr. Tittle works to ensure quality care is delivered across Houston Methodist Baytown Hospital, a 260-bed healthcare facility. He leads various clinical initiatives in his role, which he holds alongside titles of chief quality officer, chief of thoracic surgery and chief of thoracic oncology at the hospital. Dr. Tittle has led a committee that developed protocols to reduce the hospital's mortality rate and recently helped the hospital develop a center of excellence for thoracic oncology.

Thomas Tracy Jr., MD. CMO of Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center. Before joining Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center in August 2016, Dr. Tracy spent 19 years in leadership at Brown University's Warren Alpert Medical School in Providence, R.I., and with Lifespan health system, where he was chief medical officer and senior vice president for medical affairs at Miriam Hospital, also in Providence, R.I. He played a significant role in developing Lifespan's Hasbro Children's Hospital's surgery department, serving as its first surgeon-in-chief in 1997. Dr. Tracy is a member of the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education surgical residency review committee and a senior director with the American Board of Surgery.

Bruce Vanderhoff, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of OhioHealth (Columbus). Dr. Vanderhoff joined OhioHealth in 1996, and assumed his current roles in 2008. At OhioHealth, he is responsible for encouraging patient safety and quality, as well as advancing the health system's physician leadership program. He serves as a diplomat of the American Board of Family Medicine and a fellow in the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Ralph Velazquez, MD, CMO at OSF HealthCare (Peoria, Ill.). Dr. Velazquez has served in various leadership roles at OSF HealthCare and in his current role is responsible for leading the system's clinical strategy. He oversees academics and research, accountable care, care management services, managed care, quality and safety, telehealth, clinical documentation integrity and the credentialing verification organization for the health system. The family medicine physician also serves as vice chairman of the Monmouth College Board of Trustees.

Stephen Weber, MD. Vice President for Clinical Effectiveness and CMO of University of Chicago Medicine. Dr. Weber specializes in antimicrobial-resistant infections in vulnerable populations, particularly geriatric patients. He has authored multiple studies on the prevention and management of healthcare-associated infections, such as those caused by multidrug-resistant organisms. Dr. Weber is a member of several prominent medical societies, including the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, the American Society for Microbiology and the Infectious Diseases Society of America.

Robert J. Weil, MD. Senior Vice President and CMO of Catholic Health Initiatives (Englewood, Colo.). Dr. Weil took the helm as senior vice president and CMO of CHI in 2016. Previously, he served as chief medical executive, associate chief scientific officer of clinical and translational research, and medical director of care support systems at Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger. At CHI, Dr. Weill, who is a trained neurosurgeon, works to enhance the quality and safety of care delivery at the 103-hospital system.

Joseph Weinstein, MD. CMO of Steward Health Care System (Boston). Dr. Weinstein is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease. As CMO of Steward, Dr. Weinstein is responsible for ensuring best-in-class patient outcomes and a stellar patient experience, as well as improving behavioral health access and quality, and leveraging technology to better serve patients. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Cardiology.

Patrice Weiss, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Carilion Clinic (Roanoke, Va.). Before becoming executive vice president and CMO of Carilion Clinic, Dr. Weiss served as chair and residency program director of the department of OB-GYN, as well as medical director of the Carilion Clinic Breast Care Center. Dr. Weiss, who is also a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, is a past chair of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Committee on Patient Safety and Quality Improvement. She is a member of the Council on Patient Safety in Women's Healthcare and the Society for Academic Specialists in General Obstetrics and Gynecology, and serves on the board of the Blue Ridge Indemnity Captive, Carilion's wholly owned captive insurance company.

Mark Welton, MD. CMO of Fairview (Minneapolis). Dr. Welton has experience leading within the health system and group practices. He previously served as the Harry A. Oberhelman Jr. Professor of Surgery and chief of colon and rectal surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine as well as chief of staff for Stanford Hospital and Clinics. In his current role as CMO, Dr. Welton oversees the system's 5,000-plus clinical providers across 12 hospitals and medical centers

David Wessel, MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Hospital and Specialty Services at Children's National Health System (Washington, D.C.). Board certified in anesthesiology, pediatrics, pediatric cardiology and pediatric critical care medicine, Dr. Wessel is internationally known for his pioneering work in caring for infants with heart disease. In addition to being as executive vice president and CMO of hospital specialty services, Dr. Wessel is the Ikaria distinguished professor of critical care medicine at Children's National Health System and a professor of anesthesiology, critical care medicine and pediatrics at George Washington University.

Thomas Whalen, MD. CMO of Lehigh Valley Health Network (Allentown, Pa.). Since 2011, Dr. Whalen — a pediatric surgeon — has been CMO at Lehigh Valley Health Network. Throughout his career, he has served as chair of the department of surgery for the network, spent 17 years on the faculty of Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and dedicated 28 years to the medical corps of the U.S. Navy regular and U.S. Navy Reserve. Dr. Whalen is a former president of the Association of Program Directors in Surgery, and he was elected a regent of the American College of Surgeons in 2003.

Robert Wiebe, MD. CMO of CommonSpirit Health (San Francisco). As CMO of CommonSpirit Health, the newly formed health system created after the merger of Dignity Health and Catholic Health Initiatives, Dr. Wiebe is responsible for clinical governance, patient safety, quality, patient experience, clinical service lines, academic medicine, clinical research, medical informatics and clinical data science. Dr. Wiebe joined Dignity in 2008 and served as its executive vice president and CMO. Before that, he served at the Veterans Integrated Service Network.

David Wood Jr., MD. Executive Vice President and CMO of Beaumont Health (Royal Oak, Mich.). As executive vice president and CMO of Beaumont Health, Dr. Wood is charged with overseeing the educational, research and quality programs at the hospital. Prior to joining Beaumont, Dr. Wood was the chief of University of Michigan Health System's division of urologic oncology from 2002 to 2011. Dr. Wood has participated in 25 grant‐funded studies and has authored more than 175 articles in peer‐reviewed journals and more than 20 book chapters. He has co-authored two books.

Robert Wyllie, MD. Chief of Medical Operations for Cleveland Clinic. Throughout his career, Dr. Wyllie has made several significant contributions to the pediatric care field, including founding the department of pediatric gastroenterology, a program with one of the only active bowel, liver and pancreas transplant services in the U.S. Dr. Wyllie first joined the Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital in 2006, and helped recruit 100 pediatric medical and surgical physicians for the system. Some of his other contributions include establishing a special delivery unit for infants with health problems identified in utero, establishing a pediatric pain programs and opening an autism school.
