1. One-quarter of physicians who considered themselves a full- or part-time salaried employee (50 percent of total respondents) said they worked on a locum tenens basis. Eleven percent said they would not consider it, but 64 percent said they would consider working on a locum tenens basis in the future.
2. Of solo practice physicians (20 percent of respondents), 25 percent they work occasionally on a locum tenens, and 63 percent said they did not, but would consider it in the future. Twelve percent would not consider working on a locum tenens basis.
3. Of retired physicians (2 percent of respondents), 32 percent said they continue to work on a locum tenens basis; 68 percent did not currently work on a locum tenens basis, but said they would consider it in the future.
4. Of residents and fellows (5 percent of respondents), 14 percent worked on a locum tenens basis. Eight percent said they would not consider working on a locum tenens basis, but 78 percent said they didn't but would consider it in the future.
5. More physicians in the Southeast (28 percent) and the Southwest (29 percent) worked on a locum tenens basis, with the fewest in the Northeast (20 percent). Physicians in the Northeast and West who did not currently work on a locum tenens basis were more likely to consider it in the future (68 percent of respondents for both regions).
