Here are 20 individuals who were named CEO of a hospital over the past year.

Jo Adkins (West Valley Hospital Medical Center; Goodyear, Ariz.). Ms. Adkins was named CEO of West Valley Hospital Medical Center in Dec. 2008. She has more than 25 years of experience in the healthcare industry and previously served as CEO of Sun Health Del E. Webb Hospital in Sun City West, Ariz. She also served as COO of Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Ill.

Trent Crable (The George Washington University Hospitals; Washington, D.C.). Mr. Crable was appointed CEO of The George Washington University Hospitals in January. Previously, Mr. Crable served as interim CEO and COO for the organization. He has more than 30 years of experience in for-profit and non-profit management. Previous positions include associate executive director at the University of Alabama at Birmingham University Hospital, vice president-professional services at the Virginia Commonwealth Health System/Medical College of Virginia Hospitals and CEO of HCA Retreat Hospital in Richmond, Va. Mr. Crable earned a master's in business administration from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.

Bryan D. Hehemann (McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital; Oxford, Ohio). Mr. Hehemann was named CEO of McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital in Aug. 2008. He most recently served as vice president-administrative services at Fremont (Neb.) Area Medical Center. He also held the position of vice president-strategic business development at Cheyenne (Wyo.) Regional Medical Center. Mr. Hehemann received his master's in healthcare policy and management from The Ohio State University in Columbus.

Brad Holland (San Angelo Community Medical Center; San Angelo, Texas.). Mr. Holland was appointed CEO of San Angelo Community Medical Center in Dec. 2008. He most recently served as interim CEO of River Region Health System in Vicksburg, Miss. Prior positions include COO of River Region Health System and COO of Woodland Heights Medical Center in Lufkin, Texas. Mr. Holland earned his master's in healthcare administration at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.

Kenneth P. Kates (University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics; Iowa City, Iowa). Mr. Kates was announced as CEO of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in July 2008. He previously served as a consultant with Alvarez and Marsal, a professional services firm located in Chicago, and held administrative positions at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia and at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Health System. Mr. Kates received a master's in business administration from Temple University in Philadelphia.

Michael K. Lally (Calais Regional Hospital; Calais, Maine). Mr. Lally was named CEO of Calais Regional Hospital in Dec. 2008. He most recently served as director of clinical business affairs for The Miriam Hospital in Providence, R.I. Mr. Lally also served as CEO for The Westerly (R.I.) Hospital. Mr. Lally holds a master's in health services administration from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Bill Lawrence (Central Michigan Community Hospital; Mt. Pleasant, Mich.). Mr. Lawrence was named CEO of Central Michigan Community Hospital in Oct. 2008. Previously, he served as president for University Hospitals Health System – Richmond Medical Center in Cleveland. Mr. Lawrence also held administrative positions at Primary Health Systems and Brentwood Hospital, both in the greater Cleveland area. Mr. Lawrence holds a master's in business administration from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

Don McKenna (St. Mary's Healthcare System; Athens, Ga.). Mr. McKenna was appointed CEO of St. Mary's Healthcare System in Dec. 2008. He formerly served as COO of Wuesthoff Medical Center in Melbourne, Fla. Mr. McKenna also worked for Tenet Healthcare Corp. as CEO of Seven Rivers Community Hospital in Crystal River, Fla., and as COO for North Ridge Medical Center in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Mr. McKenna holds a master's in public administration from Long Island University in Brookville, N.Y.

John O'Neil (St. Vincent's Health System; Birmingham, Ala.). Mr. O'Neil was named CEO of St. Vincent's Health System in January. He previously served as CEO for Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Hospital in Binghamton, N.Y., and as ministry market leader for five Ascension Health hospitals in New York and Connecticut. Mr. O'Neil holds a master's in health services administration from Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant.

Julie Petersen (Prosser Hospital; Yakima, Wash.). Ms. Petersen was announced as CEO of Prosser Hospital in February. She served as the hospital's CFO since 2001. Ms. Petersen has been a resident of Yakima since 1995.

Pat Robinson (Edgefield County Hospital; Edgefield, S.C.). Ms. Robinson was named CEO of Edgefield County Hospital in Dec. 2008. Ms. Robinson has been employed by the hospital since its opening in 1970 and most recently served as the director of nursing.

Jason A. Spring (North Valley Hospital; Whitefish, Mont.). Mr. Spring was named CEO of North Valley Hospital in February. He formerly served as CEO of HealthPark Hospital in Hot Springs, Ark. Mr. Spring holds a master's in health service administration from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

Brenda Sturm (Community Hospital; Torrington, Wyo.). Ms. Sturm was named CEO of the Community Hospital in Torrington, Wyo., in February. She previously served as the hospital's chief nursing officer. Prior to that, Ms. Sturm served as clinic administrator/division director for the Ethel Lund Medical Center in Juneau, Alaska. Ms. Sturm received her master's in nursing/healthcare administration from Graceland University in Independence, Mo.

Timothy C. Tobin (Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center; Fredericksburg, Va.). Mr. Tobin was named CEO of Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center in June 2008. He previously served as the CEO for Alleghany Regional Hospital in Low Moor, Va., and at Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands, Va. Mr. Tobin holds a master's in healthcare administration from Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.

Peggy Troy (Milwaukee Children's Hospital; Milwaukee, Wis.). Ms. Troy was appointed CEO of Milwaukee Children's Hospital in January. Previously, she served as COO for Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare and CEO of Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center, both in Memphis, Tenn. Ms. Troy received a master's in nursing from DePaul University in Chicago, Ill.

Pamela S. Tvarkunas (Riley Hospital; Meridian, Miss.). Ms. Tvarkunas was named CEO of Riley Hospital in January. She previously served as COO and director of nursing for the hospital and has been with the organization for 37 years. Ms. Tvarkunas received her master's in nursing from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg.

Kenneth Westbrook (Integrated Healthcare Holdings; Santa Ana, Calif.). Mr. Westbrook was named CEO of Integrated Healthcare Holdings in Dec. 2008. He previously ran 16 acute care hospitals as a senior vice president for Tenet Healthcare. Mr. Westbrook holds a master's in business administration from the University of Redlands (Calif.).

John White (North Hawaii Community Hospital; Kamuela, Hawaii). Mr. White was announced as CEO of North Hawaii Community Hospital in February. He previously served as CEO of Samaritan Healthcare in Moses Lake, Wash., and CEO of Newport (Wash.) Community Hospital. Mr. White received his master's in healthcare administration from the University of Washington in Seattle.

Alex Villa (Fallbrook Hospital; Fallbrook, Calif.). Mr. Villa was named CEO of Fallbrook Hospital in Oct. 2008. He was most recently COO at Summerlin Hospital Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nev. Mr. Villa holds a master's in health administration from California State University Northridge.

Michael Young (Grady Health System; Atlanta, Ga.). Mr. Young was named CEO of Grady Health System in Sept. 2008. He has more than 28 years of healthcare experience and most recently served as president and CEO of Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo, N.Y. Mr. Young received a master's in healthcare administration from the University of Pittsburgh (Pa.) and has completed additional training at Harvard Business School.
