Renown Regional in Nevada Releases 10 Cardiologists From Non-Competes Under FTC Settlement

The Federal Trade Commission approved a final order yesterday that releases 10 cardiologists from noncompete agreements with Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nev., according to a Reno Gazette-Journal report.

With its 5-0 vote, the FTC allowed up to 10 cardiologists on Renown's staff to join competing practices without penalties. The decision stems from a lawsuit the FTC filed, claiming Renown violated federal law by consolidating two physician practices that allegedly decreased competition and could increase cardiology prices in the area.

A hospital spokesperson said eight cardiologists are leaving to practice at other area hospitals, and two others plan to move into private practice. Those departing cardiologists will retain hospital privileges at Renown.
