A New York physician was arrested and charged for allegedly taking part in a billing scheme to defraud the state's Medicaid program by nearly $1 million, according to New York's attorney general.
New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood said in a news release that Edwardo Yambo, MD, stole roughly $939,000 from the New York Medicaid program and managed care organizations by submitting and causing the submission of false claims. Dr. Yambo's claims falsely stated his laboratory delivered specific drug testing services when those services were not rendered, according to court papers filed in the Suffolk County First District Court.
The court papers also claim Dr. Yambo performed medically unnecessary services. Additionally, Dr. Yambo operated his lab without a director, the complaint alleges. State and federal regulations mandate a lab employ a director to oversee operations.
Dr. Yambo surrendered his prescribing privileges prior to his arrest. He was arraigned Oct. 30, and his case is adjourned until Dec. 5.
