Pennsylvania hospital misplaced baby's body after miscarriage, lawsuit claims

A couple filed a lawsuit Aug. 22 against Bryn Mawr (Pa.) Hospital, alleging the hospital misplaced their miscarried baby's body for days, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Bryn Mawr Hospital mistakenly sent the mother's placenta to a nearby funeral home, the lawsuit claims, and found the baby's remains 17 days later. The parents, Tiffany Griffin and Chad Greaves, said they received a call from the hospital notifying them there was a "mix-up with paperwork." They were eventually shown the actual remains, which were sent to another funeral home for cremation.

The couple received no explanation about where the body was found, who found it and how the error occurred, Ms. Griffin said. The couple also worried whether the remains they saw were actually their baby's.

"We were deeply upset to learn of this mistake, which added to the grief Ms. Griffin and Mr. Greaves were already experiencing," said Bridget Therriault, a spokesperson for Main Line Health. "We shared with the couple our sincerest apologies, and once again extend our sympathies for their loss and the pain they experienced thereafter."

The health system conducted an investigation into the error and took corrective steps to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future, Ms. Therriault told The Philadelphia Inquirer.
