Pennsylvania DA to probe death of 6-year-old patient at Hershey Medical Center

Dauphin County District Attorney Ed Marsico said his office will "review the circumstances" leading to the death of a 6-year-old patient at Penn State Milton S. Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center in January, PennLive reports.

The child was admitted to the hospital Jan. 10 with a body temperature of 89.4 degrees and subsequently wrapped in a heated blanket. Under the medical center's policies, medical personnel were required to check on the boy every two hours. However, an investigation by the Pennsylvania Department of Health revealed hospital staff did not check on the boy for at least 10 hours, the report states.

When staff went to check on the patient the following morning, the child did not display any vital signs and his body temperature was logged at 107.6 degrees, according to the report.

Mr. Marsico told PennLive his office learned of the incident after news reports surfaced last week. He said investigators will examine the medical staff's actions and whether the child maintained any injuries prior to being admitted to the medical center.
