Patient claims St. Charles Health nurse illegally shared PHI, sues system for $500k

Julie Spitzer -

A former patient is suing Bend, Ore.-based St. Charles Health System for $500,000, claiming a nurse illegally accessed and shared his protected health information with a friend they both knew, The Bulletin reports.

Jason Miller received treatment at St. Charles Bend May 15, 2016, for injuries related to an all-terrain vehicle accident. Jennifer Noble, a nurse not assigned to him, allegedly accessed his medical information and shared his blood alcohol content with Kim Ceniga, their mutual friend. Although Mr. Miller knew Ms. Ceniga, he did not want her to know this detail of his accident, the lawsuit states.

The lawsuit includes three claims seeking non-economic damages amounting to a minimum sum of $500,000.

Becker's Hospital Review reached out to St. Charles, but Lisa Goodman, a hospital spokeswoman, declined to comment on the lawsuit. "We don't comment on pending litigation," she wrote in an email.

Ms. Noble holds an active certified nursing license in Oregon, and the state's Board of Nursing website does not list any disciplinary actions on her license, according to The Bulletin.
