Nurse gets 13 years in prison for NICU injuries at UnityPoint Health-Meriter

A former nurse at Madison, Wis.-based UnityPoint Health-Meriter was sentenced to 13 years in prison for injuring nine infants in the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit between 2017 and 2018, reports the Wisconsin State Journal.

In September, Christopher Kaphaem pleaded guilty to 19 felony counts in connection to the injuries, including child abuse, child neglect and patient abuse. He was sentenced Feb. 20.

UnityPoint-Meriter notified authorities about a string of unexplained injuries in its NICU in February 2018. The NICU injuries ranged from bruising on limbs to a fractured arm and skull, according to a 2018 CMS investigation.

A police investigation identified Mr. Kaphaem as a common denominator in all the cases.

Mr. Kaphaem no longer works at UnityPoint-Meriter, and his nursing license was suspended by the state nursing board in March 2018.
