Los Angeles physician convicted in $33M billing fraud scheme

A federal jury found Robert Glazer, MD, guilty June 7 for his role in a $33 million fraud scheme that involved billing Medicare for healthcare services that were never provided, according to the Department of Justice.

After a seven-day trial, Dr. Glazer was found guilty of one count of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud and 12 counts of healthcare fraud. Dr. Glazer, who owned and operated Glazer Clinic in Los Angeles, was charged in a superseding indictment in June 2015.

According to evidence presented at trial, Dr. Glazer billed Medicare for services and tests that patients did not need or did not receive. Dr. Glazer's co-defendant, Marina Merino, and others recruited the patients.

Dr. Glazer also referred patients to Fifth Avenue Home Health in Los Angeles for home health and hospice services that were not medically necessary. The company's owners billed Medicare for those services, some of which were never provided.

The defendants, including Dr. Glazer, and their co-conspirators submitted or caused others to submit $33 million in claims, of which Medicare paid approximately $22 million, according to the Justice Department.

Dr. Glazer's sentencing hearing is scheduled for Sept. 9.
