Legislation May Require Wyoming Hospitals to Post Prices Online

Many Wyoming hospitals are opposed to a potential legislative effort that would require hospitals to post more of their prices and quality measures online, according to a Wyoming News report.

State lawmakers are debating the proposal and will vote Dec. 13 or 14 on whether to sponsor the bill for the 2013 legislation.

Hospitals would be required to share the standard charges for inpatient care, obstetric services and various other procedures, as well as infection rates. Data would be accessible on the Internet and free of charge.

Dan Perdue, president of the Wyoming Hospital Association, said the legislative effort is unnecessary since most of that information is already voluntarily reported by the state's hospitals. The WHA launched a website last year that allows visitors to check prices for the top 25 procedures at all Wyoming hospitals, free of charge.
