Former employee sues New Mexico hospital for discrimination

Kelly Gooch -

A former employee is accusing Albuquerque-based University of New Mexico Hospital of workplace discrimination, according to a KRQE report.

Mercedes Kern, who worked as a nurse at the hospital since 2013, claims in a lawsuit colleagues bullied her. Ms. Kern's attorney, Donald Gilpin, told KRQE his client came to the United States from Spain and suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder related to her upbringing. He said coworkers treated her differently "because of her Spanish speaking and because of her accent." According to the report, Ms. Kern claims she reported the alleged mistreatment, but her complaints were ignored by hospital staff.

UNM Hospital declined to comment to Becker's Hospital Review, citing pending litigation.
