Former California pharmacy owner gets 4 years for orchestrating $1.3M Medicare scam

The former owner of Akhtamar Pharmacy, based in Pasadena, Calif., was sentenced to four years in prison for orchestrating a $1.3 million Medicare fraud scheme, according to the Pasadena Star-News.

Tamar Tatarian, 39, was convicted of healthcare fraud and  wire fraud last December. On top of serving four years in prison, Ms. Tatarian was ordered to pay $1.5 million in restitution to Medicare.

Ms. Tatarian engaged in a scheme involving the submission of fraudulent claims to Medicare Part D insurers for prescription drugs that the pharmacy never ordered or dispensed and  tried to conceal the fraud by creating fake invoices.
