Florida healthcare mogul must pay $44M in massive Medicare fraud case, court rules

A federal judge has ordered Philip Esformes, a Florida healthcare executive sentenced to 20 years in prison in a $1.3 billion Medicare fraud case, to pay $44.2 million in forfeiture and restitution, according to Law360.

Mr. Esformes, who operated a chain of skilled nursing homes and assisted living facilities in Florida, was sentenced in September, roughly five months after a jury found him guilty of 20 charges, including paying and receiving kickbacks, money laundering and bribery. He was convicted after an eight-week trial for his role in a $1.3 billion Medicare fraud case, which was one of the largest healthcare fraud schemes ever charged by the Justice Department.

During a hearing Nov. 21, U.S. District Judge Robert Scola ordered Mr. Esformes to pay $5.5 million in restitution and to forfeit $38.7 million, according to McKnight's Long-Term Care News. He was also ordered to pay an additional $617,000 for the cost of his incarceration, the Miami Herald reports.
