Federal grand jury subpoenas Broward Health in FBI case: 3 things to know

Kelly Gooch -

A federal grand jury has subpoenaed Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based Broward Health in relation to an ongoing FBI investigation, demanding purchasing documents from the public health system, according to a report on FloridaBulldog.org, which cites two knowledgeable sources.

Here are three things to know about the subpoena.

1. The subpoena was served earlier this month, and is said to seek information about former procurement officer Brian Bravo and 16 companies that do business with Broward Health, including Alpharetta, Ga.-based MedAssets, a group purchasing organization for the public health system, as well as other hospitals with a market capitalization of $1.87 billion.

2. Joel Gustafson, a member of the board of commissioners for Broward Health, when asked by FloridaBulldog.org if he was aware of the subpoena, said, "I don’t know if I'm allowed to answer that question. We've been admonished not to talk about any alleged investigation. If I find that I can, I'll call you back."

3. The subpoena comes after Broward Health's president and CEO Nabil El Sanadi, MD, was found dead in his condominium from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Subsequently, corporate private investigator Wayne Black came forward, claiming Dr. El Sanadi had hired him last spring for an investigation into Broward that led to FBI involvement.
