FBI raids Pennsylvania hospital

Federal investigators raided now-shuttered Ellwood (Pa.) City Medical Center on Jan. 30.

The FBI hasn't provided details about the raid. A spokesperson for the agency's Pittsburgh office told the Ellwood City Ledger that the FBI was "conducting law enforcement activity" at the hospital, but officials would not comment on what they were looking for.

Ellwood City Medical Center's owner, Americore Health, closed the hospital Dec. 10 and filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy a few weeks later. The hospital and Americore have been the subject of federal and state investigations for more than a year, according to the Ellwood City Ledger.

The investigations stem from financial issues. Last year, the hospital delayed payroll several times and vendors reported non-payment. The Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office recently filed a lawsuit against Americore, alleging the company failed to meet requirements imposed when it took over the Ellwood City Medical Center. Those requirements include keeping the hospital open for 10 years.
