LifePoint hit with age discrimination suit filed by former hospital CFO

Ayla Ellison -

The former CFO at Ishpeming, Mich.-based Bell Hospital has filed a lawsuit against Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Hospitals alleging he was terminated as Bell Hospital's financial leader because of his age, according to an ABC10 report.

In 2013, when Gerald Messana was 54 years old, he was let go as CFO of Bell Hospital, which was purchased by LifePoint last year. Mr. Messana was replaced by 38-year-old Teresa Morrison.

In his lawsuit, Mr. Messana claims Ms. Morrison is "less qualified and less experienced," according to the report. Mr. Messana also claims his role was given to his younger replacement even though he had a history of "good work performance."

Mr. Messana filed his lawsuit under the federal Age Discrimination Employment Act and is seeking an undisclosed amount in excess of $75,000, according to the report.
