California passes law to protect healthcare whistleblowers

Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill into law July 11 that protects healthcare whistleblowers who report patient safety issues, The Sacramento Bee reports.

The law aims to protect workers who fear retaliation or discrimination after reporting unsafe conditions at a healthcare facility. The law allows workers to file complaints with the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health without the presence of hospital management, according to the report.

The law is an amendment to the California Health and Safety Code.
