Boston Children's Hospital sues Saudi prince over $3.5M bill

Boston Children's Hospital filed a lawsuit against a Saudi Arabian prince, alleging he owes the hospital $3.5 million, which he agreed to pay, for care provided to a Saudi Arabian child, according to The Boston Globe.

The lawsuit, pending in U.S. District Court in Boston, alleges Prince Abdelilah bin Abdelaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Faisal Al Saud offered to pay for the care after learning about the child through media reports in Saudi Arabia. The 2-year-old child has type 1 spinal muscular atrophy, a rare genetic disease. The medicine used to treat the condition is not available in Saudi Arabia.

The child, who is not named in the lawsuit, was admitted to Boston Children's in November 2017 and is still a patient there. The prince made an initial payment to the hospital of $750,000, but then stopped paying for the child's care, according to the lawsuit.

Boston Children's alleges that it has tried to collect the outstanding balance numerous times, but the prince has refused to pay for the patient's care.
