Attorneys general team up to oppose Trump administration rules over family planning services

Kelly Gooch -

Twenty attorneys general — led by California Attorney General Xavier Becerra — are pushing back against the Trump administration over family planning services rules.

The coalition of 19 states and the District of Columbia filed a brief in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia supporting a challenge filed May 2 by Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin, Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio and Planned Parenthood Association of Utah, along with the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association, according to a news release from Mr. Becerra.

The challenge seeks to block the federal government's efforts to reduce funding for Title X, the U.S. family planning program, and provide funding to natural family planning methods and abstinence-only education.

Mr. Becerra said May 15 the coalition is supporting the challenge because of the potential harm it believes the rules would cause various populations.

They "would jeopardize the lives and the health of millions of low-income women and families across the United States by threatening funding for birth control, sexually transmitted disease testing, breast and cervical cancer screenings, and infertility treatment," he said.

In addition to Mr. Becerra, the coalition includes attorneys general of Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, Vermont, Washington, and the District of Columbia.
