Arlington Heights, Ill.-based Alexian Brothers Health System has been hit with a lawsuit alleging its billing policies violate the Illinois Consumer Fraud Act, according to The Cook County Record.
Arshad Qureshi, a patient who received care through the Alexian Brothers system, filed the lawsuit March 31 in Cook County Circuit Court. Mr. Qureshi claims he was uninsured at the time he received medical services from Alexian Brothers, and the system billed him for a higher amount than it would have billed health insurers or government payers for the same services.
In his complaint, Mr. Qureshi said he believes there are a large number of other patients who lacked health insurance and were overcharged by Alexian Brothers, according to the report.
Mr. Qureshi asked the court to order Alexian Brothers to terminate its alleged practice of charging the uninsured more than it charges insured patients. He also requested damages for the difference between what he was charged and what the system charged insured patients for the same services.
Alexian Brothers did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
