2 assisted living employees arrested after dementia patient duct-taped to chair

Harrison Cook -

Two assisted living facility employees were arrested after they allegedly restrained a 67-year-old dementia patient with duct tape July 3, according to ABC 15.

Lashron Williams and Phygelle Brudent, staff at Regal Park Assisted Living Facility in Boynton Beach, Fla., were charged with elderly abuse and false imprisonment.

Ms. Brudent told police she took the patient to another room, where she duct-taped her to a chair and placed a piece of tape over her mouth. Ms. Brudent told police she was frustrated over the elderly patient's inability to be silent and had other patient to care for.

The patient could not confirm the caretakers' actions due to her dementia, according to a detective investigating the case.

Ms. Williams knew the patient was duct-taped, as she she had to remove the tape around her mouth to administer sleeping pills, according to a probable cause affidavit cited by ABC 15. Ms. Williams acknowledged duct-taping the patient to the chair was wrong, but failed to report it, according to a police report.

Both women were booked into Palm Beach County Jail and denied bond.
