Grow recently announced the release of our new AI-assisted products for our therapists, developed with these principles in mind. Using ambient listening technology, therapists receive structured drafts of notes to edit, refine, and approve after sessions based on their spoken conversations, and clients get visit summaries that provide a clear explanation of what was covered and remains outstanding in their treatment goals. These tools result from months of careful consideration, learning, and iterative development. To ensure a secure and sustainable approach to AI, the team carefully assessed therapist and client concerns, tested multiple versions of the tool, and conducted a soft launch with a small group of therapists to gather feedback and refine the experience. In short, it offers a thoughtful approach that sets a standard for effective AI integration into mental health care delivery.
Guiding Principles for Client-Centered AI
In developing these AI-assisted tools, Grow applied the following principles to diligently navigate privacy and other concerns:
- Client Consent and Privacy: Both tools are only available with both parties’ consent. Our goal is to safeguard our clients’ sensitive session data and align with our commitment to complying with HIPAA requirements and data protection measures. Grow encrypts data used by the tool to protect patient privacy. As an additional security measure, Grow’s system does not retain the raw transcript of conversations had between therapists and clients.
- Accessibility: The tool is free of charge to therapists on our platform, thereby removing financial barriers to adoption. This supports our growing network with thousands of therapists.
- Maintaining Choice: We’ve made the use of this AI tool entirely optional. This approach respects choice and recognizes that not all therapists want to incorporate AI into their practices.
- Collaborative Development: We involved our clinical team as well as our clients and therapists from the outset and throughout development so they could help anticipate and address any potential provider concerns every step of the way.
Looking Ahead
At Grow, we’re fortunate to have an incredibly talented team that’s deeply passionate about our mission to make quality therapy accessible. We’re committed to creating trustworthy technologies that help strengthen the impactful, human connections made in therapy.
Moving forward, we’ll continue to contribute to advancing responsible AI in this important and highly sensitive field of mental health care. We hope the mental health industry adopts a similarly careful approach—requiring client consent and involving a clinical team from the design stage to anticipate needs and concerns. We aim to ensure that innovation strengthens, rather than compromises, the quality and safety of therapy.
