How Technology is Ending Sticker Shock and Driving Medication Adherence in 2025

Both consumers and providers have many frustrations with the prescription medication process—the most common are price confusion and potential sticker shock at the pharmacy counter, drug shortages and prescriptions sent to pharmacies that can’t fill them, and provider frustration with an inefficient overall prescribing process.

A national survey found that 33 percent of Americans don’t fill their prescriptions, and the top reason (30 percent) is cost.

ePrescribing, which allows providers to send electronic prescriptions directly to a pharmacy, has been proven to improve patient safety, reduce prescribing errors, improve medication adherence, and increase operational efficiency. As of January 2024, 35 states require ePrescribing in some form. While legacy solutions in ePrescribing have largely remained the same for 20 years, new technological innovations are disrupting this space and 2025 is the year we’ll see some major changes, putting the patient front and center. Here are some predictions for the coming year:

  • For the first time, patients will have full control over where their prescriptions are filled, with the ability to choose pharmacies based on price and convenience. This will allow patients to make the best decisions for themselves and their wallets.
  • In 2025, patients will have complete price transparency for lower cost alternatives, putting the decision in the patient’s hands instead of just being visible to the doctor in the EHR when they’re prescribing.
  • In the coming year, patients will interact with the ePrescribing workflow via text message and patient portals. Traditional methods of patient access/ copay assistance are sometimes confusing and require the patient to figure this out all on their own. 2025 is the year we utilize technology to get patients on critical and sometimes life-changing treatment.
  • To make prescribing patient-centric, technology with a shift to mobile-optimized interfaces that allow for prescription batching. This will give providers time to focus on patient care and lessen administrative burdens.
