How 4 health systems are using AI, data analytics and machine learning

Hospitals are using AI, data analytics and machine learning to improve health outcomes, produce predictive clinical insights and improve patient care. Here are four artificial intelligence projects health systems have recently created and deployed as reported by Becker's Hospital Review:

  1. Springfield, Ohio-based Mercy Health will use Viz.ai's cloud-based AI system, which cross-references CT images of a patient's brain with a database of scans to find early stages of large vessel occlusion strokes, to detect diseases and speed up care to treat stroke patients. The system alerts physicians of a suspected stroke, including those that are the most debilitating.

  2. Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger Health Plan is using utilization management technology company Cohere Health's machine learning and AI technology to create episode-specific care paths, based on the member's utilization history, and individual care needs, to prompt providers to select high-value care options before requests are submitted.

  3. New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health is working with Google to expand its digital and AI capabilities. The health system will use AI and machine learning to produce predictive clinical insights, digital scheduling, automated payer interactions and intelligent visit summaries.

  4. Urbana, Ill. -based Carle Health is using Health Catalyst PowerCosting software to renovate its financial system. The software, designed to give organizations a critical view of their finances and help them assess the actual cost of care to improve outcomes, will be used at its five hospitals.
