The American College of Radiology has recruited five more health systems to participate in a pilot program that will tailor an artificial intelligence model to the unique imaging needs of each of seven participating systems.
Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington, Mass., Emory University in Atlanta, Seattle-based University of Washington, the University of California San Francisco and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston have joined the ACR AI-LAB program. Previously announced participants include Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and The Ohio State University in Columbus.
Santa Clara, Calif.-based tech company Nvidia will provide its Clara AI software toolkits to assist the health systems in adjusting the model to best fit their needs, based on their own local patient data. Nuance, a software company based in Burlington, Mass., will offer up its own technology to help with the actual integration of the AI into each system's radiology workflow.
"We know algorithms can underperform when deployed at sites where they weren't trained," said Bibb Allen Jr., MD, CMO of the ACR's Data Science Institute. "Now, radiologists in the pilot program will have access to AI algorithms developed outside their institutions in order evaluate a model's performance using their own data and, as necessary, retrain the algorithm using their local data to enhance its performance."
