BCBS Association names winner of Data Innovation Challenge

Thrive Earlier Detection, a startup developing a liquid biopsy test to identify early-stage cancers, was announced on Dec. 17 as the winner of the BlueCross BlueShield Data Innovation Challenge.

Through the challenge, hosted by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and Blue Health Intelligence, Thrive and the four other finalists in the competition were granted access to a de-identified dataset of BCBS claims information to develop their proposed claims-based solutions for reducing healthcare costs and improving outcomes.

As the winner of the Data Innovation Challenge, Thrive, which officially launched in May of this year, will have an additional six months to continue to analyze the dataset. Thrive's CancerSEEK test, developed by researchers at Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins University, uses DNA sequencing, machine learning and other technologies to detect multiple forms of early-stage cancer from a blood sample.
