The outbreak, caused by the Sudan virus, was declared Jan. 29 after a 32-year-old nurse tested positive and later died.
While the U.S. has not identified any suspected or confirmed cases, the CDC said travelers from affected areas may pose transmission risks.
The agency is emphasizing vigilance among public health departments, healthcare facilities and clinical laboratories to ensure awareness and preparedness. Patients presenting with symptoms such as fever, fatigue, joint pain, gastrointestinal issues or unexplained bleeding should be evaluated for recent international travel or contact with infected individuals, the agency said.
Hospitals should also ensure proper infection control protocols are in place, staff are trained in personal protective equipment and isolation procedures, and leadership is prepared to coordinate with public health authorities if a suspected case arises.
