10 key coronavirus study findings

Anuja Vaidya -

Here are 10 clinical findings on the new coronavirus, as reported by Becker's Hospital Review in the last month.

Note: This is not an exhaustive list of clinical findings. It's a compilation of key findings covered by Becker's reporters over the last four weeks and the dates on which the coverage was published.

March 18:
1. The new coronavirus can remain infectious in the air for up to three hours and last on some surfaces for more than a day.

2. Americans over age 65 are most at risk for severe illness and death from COVID-19, but the illness can also have detrimental effects on millennials.

March 17:
3. Though children are susceptible to COVID-19, the disease is less severe in children than in adults.

March 16:
4. The novel coronavirus does not appear to pass from mother to child at birth.

March 13:
5. The new coronavirus can spread from one person to another in less than a week, and over 10 percent of patients are infected by an asymptomatic person with COVID-19.

March 10:
6. Symptoms of the illness caused by the new coronavirus develop between five to 14 days after a person is infected.

7. People who have contracted the new coronavirus "shed" the virus most heavily in the first few days of the illness, and shedding may continue even after they stop showing symptoms.

March 9:
8. Old age, signs of sepsis and blood-clotting issues may put hospitalized COVID-19 patients at greater risk of death.

Feb. 28:
9. As pharmaceutical companies and government researchers race to find a cure for the new strain of coronavirus, there may be medications already on the market that can help treat the disease caused by the virus, dubbed COVID-19.

Feb. 25:
10. The death rate among those who develop COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, is about 2.3 percent.
