Prominent nurses union names first-ever Latina executive director: 5 things to know

Bonnie Castillo, RN, is the new executive director of National Nurses United, one of the nation's largest union and professional associations of registered nurses.

Here are five things to know about Ms. Castillo.

1. She became NNU's first Latina executive director in March.

2. As executive director, she leads NNU, which boasts 150,000 members, as well as the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee, an NNU affiliate.

3. Ms. Castillo, a proponent of single-payer healthcare in California, has been part of the union for approximately two decades. She began working for the union in 1998 after serving as a critical care nurse in Sacramento, Calif., according to California Healthline.

4. In addition to her NNU leadership role, the AFL-CIO elected Ms. Castillo to its executive council and executive committee in March.

5. Ms. Castillo was preceded by RoseAnn DeMoro.
