Nurses fear patient quality care after job cuts

Nurses on Lansing, Mich.-based Sparrow Hospital's Critical Care Team face complete termination Dec. 9, and many jobs on the IV Specialty Team will be cut as well, according to WLNS.com.

"The work we do for our patients and the expertise we provide to them is irreplaceable," said Joe Medgyessy, RN, a nurse on the Critical Care Team at Sparrow Hospital. "The work we do for our patients and the expertise we provide to them is irreplaceable." Mr. Medgyessy said the team provided assistance to the paramedics and other hospital branches.

Jeff Breslin, RN, president of the Professional Employee Council of Sparrow Hospital, said he is worried the health system won't be able to provide the best quality care to every patient due to departmental cuts.

"I understand that tough decisions have to be made financially, but I don't know if these people making the decisions realize the impact they're going to have on the community that we are dedicated to serve," Mr. Medgyessy told WLNS.com.

"We must make informed and timely decisions on how best to allocate finite resources to meet the needs of our patients. All of the full-time and part-time RNs impacted by these changes are guaranteed opportunities to maintain their current employment status within Sparrow Hospital," a spokesperson from Sparrow Hospital said in a statement cited by WLNS.com.
