New Hampshire hospital cited for 386 labor violations

The New Hampshire Labor Department cited Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital in Lebanon, N.H., last week for 386 labor violations related to timekeeping issues and work restrictions for teenage staff, according to Valley News.

Here are four things to know:

1. The labor department's investigation found APDMH incurred 386 violations between March 1, 2017, and March 30, 2018.

2. Among the violations were the hospital's failure to pay employees all they were due on payday and failure to pay some employees a required minimum of two hours' pay on scheduled work days, according to the department's report, obtained by the Valley News. The agency also found the hospital violated the state's youth employment law by improperly allowing 16- or 17-year-old employees to work more than six consecutive days in a workweek and more than 30 hours per week during the academic year. State law prohibits employees younger than 16 from working more than three hours per day and past 9 p.m. on school days.

3. A hospital spokesperson said in an Oct. 31 statement to the Valley News officials have since trained managers on work-shift requirements and youth employment laws, and have made improvements in the hospital's timekeeping technology and management oversight to ensure accuracy.

"Alice Peck Day has a proud history of working with young people on our campus and always wants to ensure that our employees are accurately paid," Brenda Blair, vice president and COO of APDMH said in a statement to the publication. "We are confident we have put the appropriate measures in place to make sure APD remains in compliance with state and federal labor laws."

4. The hospital has faced other labor issues related to its senior living facilities in the past, the report states, including the firing of the director of the hospital's affiliated retirement community earlier this year.
