How healthcare institutions are celebrating National Nurses Week

National Nurses Week, a time to show appreciation for nurses and the care they provide, begins today and runs through May 12.

This year's theme is "Ethical Practice, Quality Care."

Here is how some healthcare institutions are celebrating.

1. McLaren Greater Lansing (Mich.) has planned a number of events, including entertaining and educational presentations related to nursing excellence, and complimentary food, beverages and massages, according to a Lansing State Journal report. According to the report, nurses at McLaren have also planned community service events.

2. The University of Buffalo (N.Y.) School of Nursing was set to hold its annual faculty and staff appreciation lunch and awards ceremony at the beginning of Nurses Week, according to the UB Reporter. The school also will hold an undergraduate nursing information session May 8.

3. Emerson Hospital in Concord, Mass., received a visit from Jeff Bauman, author of the best-selling autobiography "Stronger" and a survivor of the Boston Marathon bombings.  Mr. Bauman spoke with nurses in celebration of National Nurses Week, discussing the care he received as he recovered from the attacks, according to a news release.

4. Osage Beach, Mo.-based Lake Regional Health System selected six nurses to honor during National Nurses Week. The award committee received 42 nominations this year from employees wanting to recognize their co-workers, according to the system.
