Hospitals and unions: 8 conflicts, agreements in July

Becker's Hospital Review reported the following hospital-union events in July.

1. Nurses at Mountain View, Calif.-based El Camino Hospital authorized a strike July 16 amid contract negotiations.

2. Nurses and other employees voted to unionize in a two-day election July 11-12 at three medical facilities in the Kalispell (Mont.) Regional Healthcare system.

3. Boston Medical Center and its nurses settled on a labor deal.

4. The nurses' union at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center called for federal involvement after the academic hospital fired a union representative and disciplined another over a Facebook Live video updating members on negotiations.

5. Nurses at St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio, approved a contract July 2 between Mercy Health and the union representing them.

6. During a demonstration July 29, Eureka, Calif.-based St. Joseph Hospital nurses called for changes in contract language to address workplace violence at the facility.

7. Kaiser Permanente workers began voting July 29 on whether to empower their bargaining team to call a nationwide strike that would affect more than 80,000 employees at Kaiser facilities.

8. An unfair labor practice charge against the Michigan Nurses Association at Royal Oak, Mich.-based Beaumont Hospital was withdrawn.
