Hospitals and unions: 10 recent conflicts, agreements

Becker's Hospital Review reported on the following events related to hospital-union relationships — including legal battles, contracts and elections — since Dec. 8.

1. NLRB: New York hospital illegally fired 2 nurses to quash union organizing
The National Labor Relations Board ruled against Ithaca, N.Y.-based Cayuga Medical Center regarding the termination of two nurses, according to The Ithaca Voice.

2. Berkshire Medical Center nurses to hold strike authorization vote
Registered nurses at Pittsfield, Mass.-based Berkshire Medical Center could potentially go on strike for the second time in 12 months, according to The Berkshire Eagle.

3. Sparrow Hospital workers ratify 3-year labor deal
A contract between Lansing, Mich.-based Sparrow Hospital and the Professional Employee Council of Sparrow Hospital/Michigan Nurses Association is official.

4. Tufts nurses ratify new contract after nearly 2 years of bargaining
A contract between Boston-based Tufts Medical Center and the Massachusetts Nurses Association is now official.

5. Kaleida nurses fight against proposed uniform change
Buffalo, N.Y.-based Kaleida Health's proposal to change its dress code for nurses sparked resistance, according to The Buffalo News.

6. NLRB: Union complaints against Baystate Franklin have merit
The National Relations Review Board found merit in three complaints filed by the security officers union at Greenfield, Mass.-based Baystate Franklin Medical Center, according to The Recorder.

7. Putnam Hospital Center nurses vote to unionize
Nurses at Carmel, N.Y.-based Putnam Hospital Center voted to join the New York State Nurses Association, according to a report.

8. St. Mary's General Hospital workers ratify labor deal
An agreement between unionized healthcare workers at St. Mary's General Hospital in Passaic, N.J., and Ontario, California-based Prime Healthcare Services is now official, according to The Record.

9. Employees strike at Mayo Clinic's Albert Lea campus: 9 things to know
Unionized healthcare workers at Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic Health System's Albert Lea campus went on strike.

10. Judge says California hospital must resume bargaining, recognize union: 5 things to know
A federal judge ordered Napa, Calif.-based Queen of the Valley Medical Center to resume negotiations with the National Union of Healthcare Workers more than a year after 400-plus hospital service and technical workers decided to join the union, according to a Napa Valley Register report.
